Offensive Players of the Week
BC Conference
QB Jake Laberge – VI Raiders
To say the Raiders comeback on Saturday was incredible is an understatement. Down 34-7 with 10 minutes to play the Raiders mounted a comeback not seen in the CJFL for quite some time. Quarterback Jake Laberge had his hand in every scoring play while orchestrating the come from behind win. He finished 21 of 30 for 334 yards, threw three touchdown passes and ran for two more.
Prairie Conference
RB Ben Abrook – Saskatoon Hilltops
The 4x defending champion Hilltops opened the season where they left off last year and a new running back has emerged. Ben Abrook carried the load with 27 rushes for 171 yards and scored three touchdowns as the Toppers blasted their provincial rivals.
Ontario Conference
WR David Raza – Niagara Regional Raiders
Despite a loss in the season opener the Niagara Regional Raiders performance on the road in the Nation’s capital proved to be all that the hometown Sooners could handle. Leading the charge for the Raiders was receiver David Raza who collected 105 yards on three receptions and scored a pair of touchdowns.
Defensive Players of the Week
BC Conference
DB Simon Winsnes – Valley Huskers
One of the biggest reasons why the Huskers beat the Okanagan Sun for the first time in their franchise history on Saturday was the play of their defence. Simon Winsnes played a major role collecting four tackles, a knockdown, had a fumble recovery and his 50 yard pick-six in the third quarter was the nail in the coffin.
Prairie Conference
DB Oshane Samuels – Edmonton Huskies
The Huskies opened the CJFL season on Sunday and their defence was dominating as they shutout the Calgary Colts. Oshane Samuels led the “D” with four tackles, a knockdown and had an interception.
Ontario Conference
LB Zachary Hoffner – Hamilton Hurricanes
The Hurricanes wasted very little time letting the Ontario Conference know that they will be a force this season with a blowout victory in Windsor. The defence was outstanding led by linebacker Zachary Hoffner who seemed to be living in the Fratmen backfield all day. He wrecked the Fratmen offensive game plan by registering 2.5 sacks and made six tackles.
Special Teams Players of the Week
BC Conference
R Max Joseph – Langley Rams
The Rams returner was one of the bright spots on Saturday in Nanaimo. He would give the Rams offence excellent field position each time he touched the ball. In all he returned seven kicks and amassed 117 yards.
Prairie Conference
K Cole Sabourin – Edmonton Huskies
The veteran kicker accounted for 22 of the Huskies 66 points on Sunday as he connected on four field goals, seven converts and even tallied three singles. He also combined for 500 net kicking yards on five punts and eight kick-offs.
Ontario Conference
K Cole Spiering – London Beefeaters
The Beefeaters kicker was perfect going 4 for 4 on converts as well as making his only field goal attempt of the game on Sunday in GTA. However most of his damage was done while punting. Aided by his team’s coverage units Spiering’s punting constantly pinned the Grizzlies and flipped the field time and time again. His longest punt of the day went for 51 yards and the Grizzlies averaged a paltry 1.5 yards a return on six punts.
