The Pursuit for Teddy

By Ryan Watters 04/22/2024, 9:00am PDT

Kick-off is set for August 17 in Ontario

The CJFL in conjunction with the Ontario Conference (OFC) have released their 2024 schedule that will see the six-member Conference open the CJFL season the weekend of August 17, 2024 with a full slate of games

The defending Conference champion St. Clair Saints begin their title defence in a Conference final rematch when they visit the London Beefeaters that afternoon at 3:00pm.  The Hamilton Hurricanes will visit the Ottawa Sooners that night at 7:00pm, then the GTA Grizzlies host the Quinte Skyhawks the next day at 1:00pm.

The teams are scheduled to play an eight-week regular season concluding on October 6th.  The Conference playoffs have a bit of a twist this year, with all six teams qualifying for postseason play, beginning with a pair of quarterfinals on October 12.  The top two seeds will have a bye into a semi-final and will await the quarterfinal winners the following weekend before the Conference championship game scheduled for Saturday October 26th.  The winner of the Conference will host the 2024 Canadian Bowl on their home field on Saturday November 9th when they host the winner of the CJFL National Semi-Final between the champion from BC and the champion from the Prairie Conference.

It was 2021, the last time the Ontario Conference hosted the Canadian Bowl.  That season the Beefeaters fell to the visiting Langley Rams.

Kicking in a Hurricane

Tyler Nold is an important piece in Hamilton

With the Canadian Bowl hosted in Ontario this season, all six teams in that Conference will be putting their best foot forward in an effort to compete for a national championship.

In Hamilton, the Hurricanes are hoping the right foot (and leg) of kicker Tyler Nold can have a major impact for them this season on special teams.  He was in the running to be a Conference All-Star punter last year, hammering 47 punts, averaging over 36 yards a kick and even tallied two singles.

He’s a big punter at 6’3, 200 pounds and has all the ability to kick the Hurricanes out of trouble along with pinning the opposition deep, which is his biggest strength.

Along with hosting the Canadian Bowl this year, Nold has several goals including elevating his game so that his name is mentioned when discussing the top kickers in the country.  He is hoping his skillset can help his club compete to bring the Ontario Conference title back to the Steel City.

Heading into his fourth season, Nold has many fond memories but the one that sticks out the most came last season against the Ottawa Sooners.  At a critical standpoint in the game, he came on to try and bail out his team needing a big punt and he delivered.  Nold booted the ball an incredible 75-yards getting his club away from danger. It was the furthest punt in the CJFL last season and got his club fired up on the sideline, something they fed off for the rest of the game.

That same contest against the Sooners was also Nold’s favourite game of his CJFL career so far.  It was a massive game for his team, needing to come together and battle, executing on all sides of the ball.  The atmosphere and energy was something he will never forget.

He and his Hurricanes teammates will be back on the first when they kick off the regular season in August as their quest to host the CJFL national championship opens.
