Five interesting points from Week 2 of the CJFL season

Following Week 2 of the CJFL season a number of interesting facts came to light as all three games unfolded. Here are the 5 takeaways from the BC Conference.

The Comeback Rebellion

Through the first two weeks of the season, never count out the Westshore Rebels.  They are 2-0 after a pair of come from behind wins.  In Week 1 they were down two scores with under six minutes to play and rallied back to beat the Valley Huskers 21-20 on the road.  Last weekend they were at it again, this time at home against their Island rivals the VI Raiders.  Down by 13 points at halftime the Rebels came out flying in their quarter scoring 16 points, then scored 13 in the final frame and shutout the Raiders on route to their second win.  Of their 328 yards of passing, 237 of it was in the second half.

Running Rams

The defending Cullen Cup champions can flat out score points.  In Week 2 they tallied 63 points in Kamloops on 541 total offensive yards. Combine that with the 42 points they posted in Week 1 and they have shot out of the gate extremely quickly.  Their 105 total points is easily the most in the BC Conference as they have averaged an impressive 52.5 points in the first two games.

Sunny Skies?

Where has the Okanagan Sun passing game been in the first two games of the season?  After Week 2 they have completed just 20 passes with just four last weekend.   Against the Huskers last Saturday they threw for 67 yards as three different receivers caught at least one pass.  This weekend they will face a very tough defence in the Westshore Rebels and passing will be challenging.

Bewildered Broncos

The Broncos have scored just 10 points in the first two games of the season.  Oddly all 10 points have come in the fourth quarter.  In Week 1 Landon Munk kicked a 31 yard field goal in the fourth for their only scoring.  Then last weekend their lone touchdown of the season came on a 43 yard pass play in the final frame.

Yellow Laundry

A combined 114 penalties were called in the three games in Week 2 resulting in 969 yards.  The game penalized the most was in Kamloops where the Broncos and Rams tallied 47 penalties for 345 yards.  Some penalties in the early part of the season are understandable with players facing live bullets for the first time.  However in Week 3 those total infractions should drop significantly, but time will tell.
