Saskatoon Hilltops 38
Edmonton Huskies 10

The Saskatoon Hilltops once again showed they are a force to be reckoned with after dominating the Huskies on Sunday afternoon.   They scored 18 points in the first quarter and their defence pitched a first half shutout.

Their offence was extremely balanced with 212 yards gained on the ground AND through the air.  Starter Damon Dutton was outstanding finishing 17 of 20 for 172 yards and threw touchdown passes to both Broden Marley and Noah Flaman.   The run game was led by Charles Sawl who galloped 92 yards on only four carries and scored a pair of touchdowns.

Defensively they were sharp.  Linebacker Matt Wist had a team high five tackles and Riece Kack had their lone sack and interception.

The Huskies were relatively quiet scoring their lone touchdown halfway through the fourth quarter as running back Mikey Pang pounded the ball in from four yards out.  Alex Gayle had a game high 109 yards on 21 carries but was kept out of the end zone.

This coming weekend the Hilltops (2-0) hit the road for the first time and visit the Winnipeg Rifles (0-2) and the Huskies (1-1) host the Regina Thunder (2-0).

Regina Thunder 24
Winnipeg Rifles 22

The Thunder kicked two field goals in the final quarter to comeback to beat the visiting Rifles on Sunday afternoon. The Rifles won every quarter except the last one and came up empty handed.

Offensively the Thunder had a massive game collecting 541 total yards, but they coughed up the ball five times and took some untimely penalties.  Quarterback Carter Shewchuk completed 16 passes for 314 yards and threw touchdowns to Isaiah Woodley and Rylan Sokul.   Running back Ryland Leichert rushed 25 times for 174 yards.

Over on the defensive side Adam King had a busy stat line with an interception, a fumble recovery, a knockdown, two tackles and an assisted stop. Linebacker Reed Rabbetz recorded two sacks.

The Rifles played an outstanding, gritty road game and almost completed the upset. They scored in every quarter except the last one.  The offensive connection of quarterback Bryson McNeil to receiver Jacob Roger was on display all game.  Roger caught 11 passes for 252 yards and two touchdowns including one that went for 84-yards.  McNeil completed 21 passes for a game high 338 yards.

This coming weekend the Thunder (2-0) will be on the road for the first time and will visit the Edmonton Huskies (1-1) while the winless Rifles (0-2) play their home opener and will host the Saskatoon Hilltops (2-0) on Sunday.

Calgary Colts 38
Edmonton Wildcats 10

The Colts shot out of the gate on Sunday and scored 24 points in the first half and their defence kept the Wildcats off the board.

They pick up their first win behind a very balanced attack offensively and a highflying defence.   The run game chewed up 231 yards led by Alan Xiang and his 148 yards on 18 carries and two touchdowns.  Meanwhile quarterback Nick Kenndey threw for 206 yards on 15 completions and connected on three touchdown passes.  Tristan Remus-Arevalo caught two of those majors and Ty Metcalfe hauled in the other.

On the other side the Wildcats scored all 10 of their points in the third quarter.  Their lone touchdown was a 50-yard run from Manny McGill about four minutes after halftime.   Two quarterbacks combined for nine completions for 104 yards.

This coming Sunday these two teams battle again, but this time the venue changes.  The Colts (1-1) will visit the Wildcats (0-2).

The Skyhawks did not have a good showing last weekend as they opened just their second CJFL season.  They were on the road at St. Clair and are still looking for their first points of the season.  This weekend will be their second straight game on the road.

The Saints blasted with Quinte Skyhawks last weekend putting up 82 points as the majority of their players saw action.  They had four different quarterbacks throw touchdown passes which is extremely rare in CJFL history.

Meanwhile the Hurricanes pitched a shutout last weekend beating the GTA Grizzlies.

It’s early in the season but this game could have homefield advantage implications for the playoffs down the road.

Langley Rams @ Kamloops Broncos - Saturday August 20, 6:00pm – Hillside Stadium | WATCH HERE

The Broncos have one of their best starts to a season in franchise history and will look to keep it going on Saturday evening at home.  They will host the defending Canadian Bowl champion Rams who are coming off a bye week after opening the season with three straight losses.

Last weekend the Broncos recorded their first ever win in Nanaimo beating the VI Raiders behind 270 yards on the ground.  Cameron Grzegorczyk galloped for 122 of those yards on 21 carries and scored a touchdown.   Their run defence was also very good holding the Raiders to 75 yards on the ground.  They will face a solid running attack with the Rams this weekend.

Speaking of the Rams they are still looking for their first victory and should be well rested after their bye.  They have had issues scoring points, averaging just seven in their last two games.
This is the only meeting of the season between these two teams.

The Raiders did keep up the fight all game scoring 12 of their 19 points in the second half and quarterback Ben Chomolok threw a pair of touchdowns.  Defensive back Tyler Ruck returned an interception 90 yards for touchdown as time expired in regulation.

The Huskers have won the previous two meetings including a 34-17 victory last weekend in Chilliwack.   They have used their ground game to pound the Kodiaks behind Reece Wyke who chewed up another 82 yards last week and scored three touchdowns.   Quarterback Josh Janssen has also been solid in the seasonal series and has connected on five touchdown passes.

On the other side the Kodiaks are still looking for their first win and have been getting better and more competitive.  Last week at Valley quarterback Liam Oczkowski threw for 187 yards had a touchdown pass and ran for another.  Their defence held the Huskers to under 100 yards on the ground and Nicholas Tremblay recorded two sacks.

SUNDAY

Edmonton Huskies @ Saskatoon Hilltops – Sunday August 21, 1:00pm – SMF Field | WATCH HERE

This could be the best game of the weekend as the Huskies visit the Hilltops on Sunday afternoon in a battle of two undefeated teams…granted they’ve only played once.  It’s still early in the season, but this game could have playoff positioning implications as this is the only meeting of the regular season.

Last weekend the Hilltops pitched a second half shutout and beat the Winnipeg Rifles 19-10 relying on their field goal kicker Conner Green.  He was named the Special Teams Player of the Week after knocking through four field goals and a convert to score 13 of their 19 points.   Their lone touchdown came on the ground from Boston Davidsen who finished with 162 yards on 27 carries.

The Huskies are on the road for the second straight weekend after getting past the Calgary Colts last week.  Running back Alex Gayle was outstanding with four touchdowns on 24 carries and 117 yards.  On the other side of the ball the defence collected nine turnovers highlighted by a pair of interceptions from Masen Lane.

The Rifles played the Saskatoon Hilltops tough last weekend but didn’t score a point in the second half losing by nine points.  They found success through the air gaining 335 yards and had a touchdown. The Wildcats scored a pair of touchdowns on the ground in the bookend quarters.  They had trouble moving the ball, something that they will need to do a better job at this weekend in Calgary.

The Colts on the other hand played the Huskies tough but committed nine turnovers.  Their touchdowns came through the air as Nick Kennedy found Cody Anglo twice.

The defending Prairie Conference champion Saskatoon Hilltops got off on the right foot with a nine-point victory on Sunday, scoring just one touchdown.

Offensively they gathered 411 total yards, 233 of which came on the ground.  Boston Davidsen led the way with 162 yards on 27 carries and scored the lone touchdown which came in the second quarter.  The only other scoring came off the foot of kicker Connor Green who booted four field goals including a 46-yarder.   Quarterback Damon Dutton was 17 of 27 for 185 yards spreading the ball to eight different receivers.

The Hilltops defence pitched a second half shutout as Konnor Johnson led the way with four tackles, had a sack, picked off a pass and had two knockdowns.   Joe Yausie led his club with eight tackles and Daylen Hartz had two sacks.

The Rifles did move the ball through the air as quarterback Bryson McNeil completed 26 passes for 307 yards and hit Eric Adams for a touchdown.

Defensively Kyle Chorney had a game high nine solo tackles and added a pair of assisted stops and Spenser Pilon had the team’s lone sack.

Next week the Hilltops (1-0) host the Edmonton Huskies (1-0) and the Rifles (0-1) are back in Saskatchewan to meet the Regina Thunder (1-0).

Regina Thunder 57
Edmonton Wildcats 14

It was a thunderous victory on Sunday for the Regina Thunder amassing 601 yards of total offence with a well-balanced attack.

Through the air quarterback Carter Shewchuk and Carter Moberg combined for 370 yards and four touchdowns.  Isaac Foord caught nine passes for 179 yards and three of those majors while Zak Woidyla caught the other.   On the ground Ryland Leichert rumbled 13 times for 109 yards and had a touchdown.  Sadik Sadik was solid with a pair of touchdowns on six carries and Keane Szabo pounded in from a yard out.

The Wildcats did not have much of an answer and did their touchdown scoring in the bookend quarters.  In the first Declan Mullin got into the endzone, then Devin Desormeau scored in the fourth with under three minutes to go.

One of their bright spots on the defensive side was DB Tanner Shaw who intercepted two passes to complement his three solo tackles.

Next week the Thunder (1-0) will welcome the Winnipeg Rifles (0-1) and the Wildcats (0-1) will stay on the road and visit the Calgary Colts (0-1).

Edmonton Huskies 37
Calgary Colts 17

The Edmonton Huskies got off on the right foot on Sunday with a lopsided win over the Calgary Colts.  They scored 27 of their 37 points in the first half and never looked back.

Running back Alex Gayle was unstoppable scoring all four of the Huskies touchdowns on 24 carries and 117 yards.   A pair of quarterbacks completed just 10 passes but gained 210 yards.

Defensively the Huskies forced nine turnovers highlighted by six interceptions.  Two of those interceptions were made by Masen Lane and Roman Iwuc had a big game with an interception, three tackles and two assisted stops.

The Colts tried to battle but any momentum they had was thwarted by a turnover.  The offence did score two passing touchdowns as quarterback Nick Kennedy found Cody Anglo for both majors.

This coming weekend the Huskies (1-0) will face the Hilltops (1-0) in Saskatoon while the Colts (0-1) host the Edmonton Wildcats (0-1).
