The Hilltops, Huskies and Thunder claim victory

Week 2 in the Prairie Conference saw three lopsided victories for the Saskatoon Hilltops, Edmonton Huskies and Regina Thunder.   All six teams in the Conference will now head into a bye week and enjoy some rest.

Saskatoon Hilltops 35
Calgary Colts 18

The defending champion Hilltops won their 33rd straight road game on Sunday doing most of their damage in the second quarter, scoring 25 of their 35 points in the frame.  Offensively quarterback Doug Fleming threw for 236 yards and found Presley Peterson for a 40 yard touchdown strike.  He also rushed for a major on four carries. His favourite target through the air was Lachlan Horsley who caught seven passes for a game high 145 yards.

On the ground the Toppers gained 165 yards and saw touchdowns from Carter McLean and Jordan Tabin.

The Colts were held to 70 yards on the ground, however did manage 331 yards of passing.  Quarterback Cole Belway completed 23 attempts and touchdowns to Joel Pipke and last week’s Offensive Player of the Week Brendt Adams.

The Huskies scored their first win of the season with a dominating performance on Saturday night compiling 616 total yards of offence.  Three different quarterbacks chipped in and reached the 400 yard plateau led by starter Declan O’Flaherty who completed just nine passes for 236 yards and two touchdowns while Jordan Lane threw two more majors and 158 yards.  Both Jake Strakowicz and DeShawn Le Jour each hauled in two touchdown passes.  A total of 11 different received caught a pass.

The Huskies scored three more touchdowns on the ground as Joel Gbalou, Epharh Oyama and Christian Pulis each got into the end zone.  In all 216 yards were gained carrying the football.  
The first kick return for a touchdown on the new season was also achieved by the Huskies as Caleb Akerley scampered 84 yards on a punt for a score.

Defensively Cheyvez Campbell intercepted two passes and Kolton Densmore had two sacks.

The Wildcats committed six turnovers which hurt them on Saturday night in their home debut.  That said they did see a couple of nice performances.  Receiver Lucas Howe hauled in a pair of touchdowns from pivot Devin Desormeau.   In all Desormeau threw for 224 yards.

After special teams gave up a punt return for a touchdown in the first quarter, they responded with a kick-off return for a major in the third.  Declan Muller took it 99 yards to the house with only 14 seconds left in the quarter.

One of the Wildcats standouts on defence was the play of Carter Parker.  He gathered a game high six tackles and had an interception return of 44 yards.

Regina Thunder 64
Winnipeg Rifles 19

The Thunder pounded the Rifles in their home opener with a well balanced attack of 297 yards through the air and 201 on the ground.  Quarterback Carter Shewchuk had himself a day completing 15 of 17 passes for 258 yards and five touchdowns.  He found Isaac Foord five times for 137 yards and three touchdowns including an 81 yard catch and run. Rylan Sokul and Garion Miller caught the other TD passes.

On the ground Justin Reiger continued to rumble for 103 yards on 10 carries and scored a touchdown on a 56 yard play.

Defensively Justin McKerracher was incredible.  He picked off a pass and returned it 23 yards for a touchdown in the first quarter, then recovered a fumble in the second frame and returned it 24 yards for a score.  He also made three tackles and had a knockdown.

After giving up 61 points in the first half the Rifles came alive in the second and scored all but three of their points.   Quarterback Thomas Hubbard threw for 183 yards and found Sekina Scheibler for a score.

Their only other touchdown came on the defensive side when Brandyn Linklater picked off a pass and returned it 25 yards for the major.

The Prairie Conference will have a bye this coming weekend before a full slate of games over the weekend of September 11-12.
