The Huskies and Hilltops advance

Edmonton Huskies 39
Regina Thunder 36

For the first time since 1993 a CJFL playoff game needed overtime to settle the score.  Sunday afternoon the Huskies scored the game winning touchdown in the extra session to punch their ticket to the Prairie Conference final.

The hero of overtime was quarterback Brendan Guy who got into end zone ending one of the most entertaining playoff games in recent memory.

The Thunder actually outgained the Huskies offensively gaining 505 yards of total offence compared to 309 by the Huskies.

Quarterback Blake Scherle was 21 of 38 for 357 yards and threw a pair of touchdowns finding Ethan Douglas and Rylan Sokul.  Running back Brayden Long was also a force gathering 156 yards on 32 carries and had a touchdown.

The Huskies offence used a pair of quarterbacks as Guy finished nine of 23 for 110 yards and threw a touchdown pass to Tanner Buchanan.  Meanwhile Tommy Yanchuk was eight of 12 for 83 yards.

On the defensive side the Huskies helped on the scoreboard.  Oshane Samuels tied a CJFL record with two fumble recoveries for touchdowns in a single game.  The last player to accomplish this feat was in 1950.  He also collected eight tackles and forced a fumble.   Linebacker Jassen Brown had a game high 12 tackles and a knockdown.

The special teams added to the scoring as well when Wes Bookland returned a kick 72 yards for a major.

The Thunder defence was led by Braxton Turnbull and Jon Martin who each collected eight tackles.

The Huskies will now travel to Saskatoon for the Prairie Conference final on Sunday at 1:00pm to try and dethrone the Hilltops.

Saskatoon Hilltops 58
Winnipeg Rifles 5

It was all Hilltops on Sunday gaining 650 yards of total offence.  Quarterback Jordan Walls was terrific completing 18 of 29 passes for 473 yards and had four touchdowns.   He would find Jason Price five times for 191 yards and two touchdowns and Tanner Rhode eight times for 193 yards and a major.  Josh Ewanchyna caught the other touchdown pass.

On the ground Ewanchyna rushed 18 times for 157 yards and had a score.

The Hilltops defence also got on the board when Logan Kelsey-Stern intercepted a pass and rumbled 117 yards for a touchdown.  His return sets two CJFL records.  It was the longest return for a touchdown in a CJFL playoff game and is the most interception return yards in a CJFL playoff game.

Defensive lineman Connor Delahey also recovered a fumble and returned it 41 yards for a touchdown.

The Rifles offence was frustrated all game, although did gain 341 yards through the air off the arm of quarterback Riley Naujoks.

The Hilltops will now host the Edmonton Huskies in the Prairie Conference next week with the winner hosting the 2018 Canadian Bowl.
