The Hilltops, Huskies and Thunder each claim victory

Saskatoon Hilltops 48
Winnipeg Rifles 7

In a playoff preview the Hilltops dominated with 485 total offensive yards on route to a perfect 8-0 season. 

Running back Josh Ewanchyna was untouchable scoring four touchdowns on 27 carries and 177 yards.  Meanwhile quarterback Jordan Walls finished 15 of 20 for 277 yards and threw three touchdowns.   He would find John Brown, David Solie and Rylan Kleiter for majors.    Jason Price caught five passes for 123 yards.

Defensively the Hilltops tallied six sacks as Garth Knittig had a pair of them.

On the other side of the field the Rifles ground game did collect 183 yards, led by quarterback Gabriel Grenier who tallied 118 yards on eight carries and scored a touchdown on a 91 yard scamper.  He also completed 12 of 27 for 145 yards.

Next week the Hilltops (8-0) will host the Rifles (3-5) in a Prairie Conference semi-final.

Edmonton Wildcats 17

The Huskies used a balanced offence on Sunday on route to capturing second place in the Prairie Conference.  Three different quarterbacks combined for 19 of 32 for 235 yards, but threw four interceptions.  

Nine different Huskies’ receivers caught at least one pass.  Tanner Buchanan hauled in a game high five passes for 79 yards and a touchdown.

On the ground both Brandt Burzuk and quarterback Tommy Yanchuk each ran for a touchdown.

On the defensive side linebacker Vince Schiffner had the best individual game of the CJFL season.  He picked off a pass and returned it 104 yards for a touchdown, recovered a fumble and returned it 25 yards for a major and had a sack and seven solo tackles.

The Wildcats on the other hand saw quarterback Justin Swedish score two touchdowns on the ground on 11 carries.   Through the air however he was picked off three times and only completed eight passes.

On the defence Jayden Dalke played in his final CJFL game and was the best player of the field for the Wildcats.  He recovered three fumbles and had a team high five solo tackles.

The Huskies (6-2) will host the Regina Thunder (5-3) this weekend in a rematch of last year’s semi-final.   The Wildcats (2-6) season comes to a close.

Calgary Colts 6

The Thunder put an exclamation point on their season and put the rest of the Prairie Conference on notice scoring 70 points and gaining 495 yards of total offence.

They would rush for 265 yards and score five touchdowns.   Brayden Long led the way scoring four of those majors on 12 carries and gained 108 yards.

Back-up quarterback Blake Scherle finished 11 of 18 for 174 yards and threw touchdown passes to Ethan Douglas and Michael Letts.  Douglas also tallied a 107 yard touchdown on a punt return.

The defence also got on the scoreboard when Finn Marcotte-Cribb returned an interception 104 yards for a touchdown.  Davin Williamson collected five tackles and a sack.

The lone Colts touchdown was a pass from quarterback Dylan Pye to Brandon MacIsaac in the fourth quarter.    Pye was 18 of 27 for 223 yards.

This weekend the Thunder (5-3) will visit the Edmonton Huskies (6-2) in a rematch of last year’s semi-final while the Colts (0-8) finish winless in 2018.
