Winnipeg Rifles 17

The Thunder used a 21 point third quarter to their advantage picking up a huge road victory to move to 4-3 on the season.

Back-up quarterback Blake Scherle was outstanding finishing 15 of 26 for 226 yards and threw three touchdowns.   Ethan Douglas, Tristan Lockman and Greg Lamb each caught a major and Douglas recorded a game high seven receptions for 104 yards.

The Thunder also scored a pair of touchdowns on the ground as Dani Boudnikov and defensive lineman Braxton Turnbull each scored.

The Rifles held a 17-10 lead at halftime but were shutout in the second half.  Their lone offensive touchdown was courtesy of Brandon Urciuoli on the ground.

Defensively Donovan Hillary was terrific collecting 30 defensive points, most in the CJFL this season.  He had 10 solo tackles, forced a fumble, recovered it and scored a touchdown.

Next week the Thunder (4-3) will visit the Calgary Colts (0-7) while the Rifles (3-4) will travel to Saskatoon to face the Hilltops (7-0) in a playoff preview.

Saskatoon Hilltops 53
Edmonton Wildcats 0

The Hilltops outgained the Wildcats in total offensive yards 525-59 in a dominating victory.  Quarterbacks Jordan Walls and Tyler Herman combined to finish 19 of 34 for 285 yards and threw three touchdown passes as John Brown, Adam Ewanchyna and Jason Price each caught one.

On the ground the two-time reigning Player of the Week Josh Ewanchyna rushed 22 times for 187 yards and three touchdowns.  As a matter of fact of the 241 yards the Hilltops collected on the ground, he had 187 of them.

Defensively Connor Delahey had four solo tackles, an assist and blocked a kick.   Evan Mantyka intercepted a pair of passes.

The Wildcats had no answer in a game in which their fifth year players were honoured prior to the opening kick-off.  Defensive back Jayden Dalke was one of those players and he recorded 11 solo tackles.

Next week both teams will play their final regular season game, the Hilltops (7-0) welcome the Winnipeg Rifles (3-4) while the Wildcats (2-5) will face their crosstown rival the Huskies (5-2).

Edmonton Huskies 56
Calgary Colts 0

The Huskies rode a 24 point first quarter to set the tone and dismantled the Colts.

Offensively both Tommy Yanchuk and Brendan Guy each tossed a touchdown pass.  Harrison Cabel and Chris Edmonds caught them.  Meanwhile on the ground Yanchuk, Ben Vanleeuwen and Taylor Rempel each scored a major.

On the defensive side the Huskies forced eight turnovers including four interceptions.   Ben Wilton picked off two passes and returned one of them 105 yards for a touchdown.  Not to be outdone Justin Hodinsky also intercepted a pair of passes and returned one of them 87 yards for a score.  In all the Huskies returned 219 interception yards, second all-time in the CJFL for a single game.  The record oddly enough is held by the Colts who returned 232 yards in 1977.

Despite turning the ball over eight times the Colts did manage 258 yards of total offence.  Quarterback Dylan Pye threw for 174 yards.  Alex Gorshak hauled in 74 of those yards on five receptions.

Next week the Huskies (5-2) will face the Edmonton Wildcats (2-5) and the Colts (0-7) will welcome the Regina Thunder (4-3).
