There will be a new sound coming from the huddles across the CJFL this upcoming season.
Of the 18 teams preparing for the year, 12 of them will have a new signal caller as a fresh crop of quarterbacks will take the helm.
Starting in the BC Conference who open the season the weekend of August 4-5, five of the six teams will hang their helmet on a new starting quarterback. The lone returning starter is Jake Laberge from the defending Cullen Cup champion VI Raiders. Last year he threw for 1,753 yards, completed 56% of his passes and a Conference high 17 touchdowns.
In Westshore the Rebels will be without Scott Borden who last season completed 48% of his passes for a Conference high 2,070 yards and 16 touchdowns.
The Okanagan Sun has seen Nick Wenman move on after completing 59% of his throws for 1,516 yards and 16 touchdowns.
The Kamloops Broncos have lost former CJFL Rookie of the Year Colby Henkel after completing 57% of his passes for 1,927 yards and nine majors.
Over in Langley the Rams will have a new pivot as they will be without Rylan Matters who completed 53% of his passes for 1,064 yards and seven touchdowns.
The Valley Huskers are seemingly in the same boat. They have brought in a new quarterback after Noah Falconer last season threw for 1,190 yards and four touchdowns.
The Prairie Conference is somewhat similar to the BC Conference with four of the six teams needing a new starting pivot. The Saskatoon Hilltops will have the Canadian Bowl Offensive Player of the Game Jordan Walls back at the helm after completing 61% of this passes last year for 1,870 yards and 16 touchdowns. Meanwhile the Edmonton Wildcats also return starter Justin Swedish who completed 55% of this throws.
The Edmonton Huskies will be looking for a new starter after the graduation of Brad Launhardt. The Prairie Conference offensive player of the year is a big loss as the main weapon in their offensive attack. He completed 61% of this passes for 1,984 yards and a Conference high 18 touchdowns.
The Regina Thunder will also be looking to replace a very productive piece of their offence after the graduation of Sawyer Buettner. He completed a Conference high 67% for 2,198 yards and 16 touchdowns a season ago.
Over in Calgary the Colts are on the hunt for their next starter after the departure of Bailey Wasdal. The veteran was the centerpiece last season completing 65% of this passes for 1,956 yards and 10 touchdowns.
Finally in Winnipeg the Rifles have lost the production of starter Jonathan Remple after he graduated following the 2017 season. Last year he completed 55% of this throws for 836 yards and nine touchdowns despite the Rifles offence centered around the run.
Much of the quarterback shuffling holds true in the Ontario Conference as well. Three of the six teams will have a new starter under centre this upcoming season. The Hamilton Hurricanes return All-Star Jake Marquette after he completed 63% of this passes for 1,520 yards and 16 touchdowns a season ago. The Conference Rookie of the Year Clarke McCallum of the London Beefeaters returns for his sophomore season after completing 62% of his throws for 1,464 yards and 12 touchdowns in 2017. Meanwhile in Niagara Bryson Mitchell is back with the Raiders after throwing for 950 yards and eight touchdowns.
Perhaps the biggest production loss for a team is in Windsor as the AKO Fratmen say good-bye to Brandon Reaume. The veteran led his club to a Canadian Bowl berth last season after completing 68% of his passes for 1,827 yards and 20 touchdowns. He also ran 46 times for 291 yards and a Conference high seven majors.
The Ottawa Sooners will be looking for a new starter after Evan Yourth’s departure. He completed 56% of this passes for 794 yards and 12 touchdowns last season.
The GTA Grizzlies are in the same situation without Drew Besco. Last season he threw for 900 yards and five touchdowns to lead the offence.
It’s a changing of the guard of sorts in 2018 for 12 CJFL teams as a new quarterback will take the helm and try to lead their team to the post season and beyond.
