Dr David Todd - Calgary Colts

The latest recipient of the CJFL Rick Smoke Volunteer Recognition Award is Dr. David Todd of the Calgary Colts.

David was the Colts team doctor for 10 years and has had a family practice in Calgary for the past 20 years.  Funny enough David’s hometown is Edmonton which made games between the Colts and Wildcats and Huskies very difficult each season.

He was not only the team doctor but “transportation coordinator” as former team President Keith Evans explains;

“At one juncture the Colts travel party became too large to be accommodated with a single bus. David's response was to purchase a large delux travel van which he told his wife was for taking the family to their cottage west of Edmonton.  However, she was quite amused by this suggestion since she knew very well that the primary purpose was for Colt road trips. During David's tenure as Team Doctor he would come to practices at least twice a week and to my knowledge never missed a home or away game including one to Windsor for a CJFL final.”

When asked what junior football means to him, David replied “Junior football provides an excellent opportunity to provide a positive influence on young men and a meaningful way to contribute to the community in which you reside.”

About the Rick Smoke Memorial Volunteer Recognition Award:

Junior football is successful because of the dedicated volunteers who work tirelessly behind the scenes. The CJFL would like to recognize these individuals.

The Rick Smoke Memorial Volunteer Recognition Award is named for former CJFL Treasurer Rick Smoke, who passed away suddenly in 2013.

Rick dedicated many years to junior football at the team and conference level, and over 25 years on the CJFL Executive as Treasurer.

This award, to honour Rick’s memory, is a tribute to celebrate and recognize the volunteers, past and present, who have dedicated a minimum of 10 years to the CJFL and junior football, whether at the team, conference or CJFL levels.
The celebrated volunteers will also be presented with a Rick Smoke Memorial Volunteers pin
