Interconference games, rivalry games and important match-ups

This coming Saturday will be a day of celebration and history making across the Canadian Junior Football League.

For the first time in CJFL history two PFC teams will fly to a pair of clubs in the BCFC for a regular season game.  The Winnipeg Rifles (1-3) will visit the Valley Huskers (0-7) in Chilliwack on Saturday afternoon at 1:00pm PST, followed by a rematch of the 2015 Canadian Bowl when the Okanagan Sun (6-1) host the Saskatoon Hilltops (4-1) at 7:00pm PST.  These two games will count in the regular season standings and could have playoff implications.

For the Huskers this will be the first time they have ever faced a team from outside the province of BC and the community of Chilliwack is extremely excited about it.  The Rifles on the other hand will also have a “first,” facing a team from outside the PFC.   Fans not making the trip to Chilliwack can still see this history making game with a live broadcast stream.

In the night cap, this will be the second time in history that the Hilltops have ever played the Sun at the Apple Bowl in Kelowna.  During the 2000 Canadian Bowl, the Sun beat the Toppers 36-28.  This will be the ninth time these two franchises have faced one another, with the Hilltops winning five of the previous eight meetings including last year’s Canadian Bowl 38-24.  Kick-off at the Apple Bowl is set for 7:00pm and a live video stream will be provided along with both local radio broadcasts.

Saturday will also feature a regular season game, played on a neural site in Medicine Hat when the Calgary Colts (4-0) battle the Regina Thunder (3-2).  This is the first junior football game that counts in the “Hat” since the Medicine Hat Rattlers left after the 1979 season.

Two mammoth rivalry games will also kick-off on Saturday night.  First the Island Rivalry ignites again as the Westshore Rebels (6-1) travel up the Island Highway to Nanaimo to face the VI Raiders (3-4).  Earlier this season the Rebels scored the franchise’s first ever victory over the Raiders, who will be looking to defend their home field.  The Rebels pulled into a first place tie with a big win over the Okanagan Sun last weekend while the Raiders are trying to get back to .500.

The other rivalry game is the battle for the City of Champions when the Huskies (1-3) face the Wildcats (0-4) in Edmonton.  It’s the second time in four weeks these two will match-up after the Huskies recorded a 62-21 dominating win.  This game always brings a big crowd and is a physical match-up as both teams really don’t want to lose to the other.

The final game in the BCFC on Saturday night will feature the Langley Rams (5-2) visiting the Kamloops Broncos (1-6).  The Rams are trying to keep pace in the standings while the Broncos have life coming off their first win of the campaign.

Over in the OFC the Ottawa Sooners (2-1) visit the Hamilton Hurricanes (3-1) in a rematch of last season’s semi-final in which the Sooners recorded the upset win.  This game is quickly becoming very important in the standings as both clubs try to keep pace with the front running Windsor AKO Fratman (3-0) who visit the Niagara Regional Raiders (0-3) on Sunday.

On Saturday afternoon a game with potential playoff implications kicks-off when the London Beefeaters (1-2) match-up with the GTA Grizzlies (1-3).  Both clubs are fighting to stay in the playoff discussion.

This Saturday will be a day of CJFL celebration stretching from Vancouver Island to Hamilton Ontario with history make games and rivalry match-ups for fans to get excited about.  Enjoy Week 9 of the CJFL season!
