The Ontario Football Conference schedule threw the Windsor AKO Fratmen a curveball but that didn’t stop them from punching out a solid season-opening victory.

Quarterback Austin Lumley passed for 155 yards and 25-yard a touchdown to Joe Ellenberger as Windsor posted a 35-0 shutout of the GTA Grizzlies on the road Sunday.

Cody McCann carried the ball 20 times for 148 yards and a TD, while Tyler Storie caught three passes for 72 yards and rambled 115 yards for a major on a punt return. Pren Duhanaj kicked a 24-yard field goal.

The Windsor defence also got in on the act, recording a pair of safeties while holding the Grizzlies to four first downs and sacking the quarterback six times. Devonte Pierce led the way with 2.5 sacks and Duhanaj picked off a pass.

Windsor was supposed to open the season Aug. 13 against the Grand River Predators but when that team folded just prior to the season, the game was scuttled. Since Grand River was supposed to play Sunday at GTA, the Fratmen simply pinch hit to fill the void.

Windsor opens its home season Saturday at 4 p.m. at Lajeunesse high school against the Ottawa Sooners.
