The Sun, Raiders and Rams in Week 3 of the season

An outstanding game that went back and forth, as the defences showed their dominance.   The Sun used a pair of quarterbacks with Foster Martens having the better game, finishing 13 of 18 for 186 yards and a touchdown pass.  Running back Brendan Hansen compiled 156 all-purpose yards collecting 99 on the ground with 18 carries and caught five passes for 57 yards and a major.

Raquille Cespedes returned a missed field goal 120 yards for a touchdown, the longest in Sun history.  He also had an interception as the defence forced four turnovers.

The Rebels fall for the first time this season, despite playing an outstanding game.  Running back Jamel Lyles led the offence with 13 carries and 121 yards with a touchdown.  Quarterback Ashton MacKinnon was 8 of 19 for 153 yards and threw a 45 yard touchdown pass to Kain Melchior.

Defensively Adam Masur and Brody Uddenberg tallied six tackles each and Jorge Yarwood blocked a field goal attempt.

The Sun (3-0) stay at home to host the VI Raiders (2-1) on Saturday night while the Rebels travel to Kamloops to face the Broncos (0-3).

The Rams defence flexed their muscle allowing 130 total offensive yards to the Broncos in their home opener.  Adam Marchetti, Nick Westad and Jahmensky Lubin each collected a sack while Jesse Cervas intercepted a pass.

Offensively the Rams used two quarterbacks; Colby Peters and Stephen Legare each completed eight passes for 110 and 111 yards respectively and combined to throw three touchdown passes.  Receiver Seye Akinsanmi had a big game making five receptions for 99 yards and a pair of majors.  On the ground the Rams used 10 different ball carries to record 148 yards.  Albert Opoku, Jordan Fox, Nick Agnoletto and Peters each scored a rushing touchdown.

The lone Broncos touchdown was a Colby Henkel pass to Hitesh Parekh in the second quarter.

The defence did force three Rams turnovers including two interceptions by Jordan Angove for his Conference leading fourth pick.  Kurtis Mutschmann had two sacks, three tackles and a knockdown.

The Rams (2-1) will host the Valley Huskers (0-3) on Saturday night while the Broncos (0-3) welcome the Westshore Rebels (2-1).

It was a tail of two halves in Nanaimo as the Valley Huskers jumped out of the gate and scored 17 points on the Raiders and led at halftime 17-10.   However in the second half the Raiders exploded for 45 points on route to their second win of the season.

Raiders’ running back Nathan Berg carried 29 times for 166 yards and scored three touchdowns, while quarterback Jacob Laberge was 9 of 12 for 146 yards and threw a touchdown pass to Dustin Rodriguez.  He also ran 8 times for 74 yards and a score.

Defensively the Raiders clamped down in the second half and forced six turnovers highlighted by Josh Paisley’s 102 yard pick six.  Dexter Shea, Cory Lewis, Matthew Cox and Doug Thornton each recovered a fumble and Ryan Porteous intercepted a pass.

Huskers’ quarterback Noah Falconer played his best game as a junior.  He was 24 of 37 for 367 yards and threw three touchdown passes.   Mike West caught a game high nine passes for 173 yards and two touchdowns, while Keenan Godden caught the other major and 115 yards.

The defence created four sacks, two turnovers and Travis Dietrich compiled a game high eight tackles.

The Raiders (2-1) will travel to face the Okanagan Sun (3-0) in Week 4 while the Huskers (0-3) will travel to Langley to face the Rams (2-1).
