A well deserved honour for an amazing man

Saturday night the amazing Keith Evans will be honoured in Calgary just prior to the Colts-Wildcats game.  He had his wife Carol will take part in the coin flip, then be honoured all night.

He has been with the Colts organization for 50 years and has met countless players and coaches.  He has been able to keep a junior program in Calgary despite the CFL and the CIS already playing in "Cowtown."

Congratulations Keith, you deserve it

Keith Evans has accomplished so much during his storied association with the Calgary Colts Junior Football Association and the Canadian Junior Football League.

Keith is about leadership and volunteerism; he challenged the future and set new standards in sport. He disciplined athletes when they deserved to be disciplined, he encouraged them when they were down and pushed them to improve. He cared about the young men that he met and mentored over the years. He loves the game of football and committed his life to the game and the players. He taught people to work hard and to appreciate how much preparation it takes to be successful. He taught the right values in the right way. To him, everyone associated with junior football was important. A sport is about sportsmanship and a chance to play the game.

His “consistent philosophy gives shape and meaning to sports and life.” He emphasizes that what we do in sports is unique and special. He never asked for much, only that you never embarrass the Calgary Colts Junior Football Association, your team, the athletes, the officials or yourself. He asked that coaches and administrators never jeopardize the welfare of the sport and that of the athletes or the integrity of the game. He taught within the rules and faced challenges with enthusiasm. He created sports opportunities for Calgary’s youth. He understood that the impact that one has on young people or anyone that you coach doesn’t end at the end of the season or at the end of an athlete’s career, it lasts a lifetime. He never forgot that the person we coach is more important than the athlete we coach. He touched so many lives by helping young men become who they are. As a leader and a builder he continued throughout his longstanding association with the Calgary Colts Junior Football Association and the Canadian Junior Football League to create new futures in sports.

Keith’s commitment, dedication, leadership and spirit of volunteerism associated with the Calgary Junior Colts Football Association; the Canadian Junior Football League; and the historical development of junior football are held in high esteem throughout the Canadian football community.

His dedication and personal sacrifice in maintaining the sport of junior football are a rarity when compared to the selfishness and individualism so prominent in sports today. Keith’s longstanding association with the Calgary Colts and the Canadian Junior Football League has been done in a quite unassuming manner. Few could only dream of traveling the Keith Evans road. The impact that Keith has made over the years in the development of junior football is deserving of the title, “Canada’s Mr. Junior Football.”

In 1988 Keith Evans received Calgary’s highest sports honor for his longstanding commitment to the Colts and the Calgary Sports community by being named the Calgary Booster Club’s Sportsman of the Year.
