The Wildcats visit the Thunder

The PFC Game of the Week could have playoff implications already in a Week 2 match-up as the Regina Thunder (1-0) host the Edmonton Wildcats (1-0).

Sunday afternoon is the only time these two teams will meet each other this season, which makes winning that more important in event of a tie down the road.

Last week the Thunder scored 49 points in a shootout against Winnipeg, scoring 21 points in the final quarter to hold onto the victory.  In the process however, the Thunder lost starting quarterback Jaeden Marwick who completed five passes for 70 yards and the lone aerial touchdown.   Back-up Sawyer Buettner finished 7 of 17 for 109 yards.  The status of Marwick is unknown at this time.

The Thunder run game was terrific last week collecting 277 yards as both Colton Klassen and Victor St. Pierre-Laviolette both rushed for over 100 yards.  The ground attack scored four touchdowns.

The offence had to be sharp in the shootout as the Thunder defence gave up 32 points and 360 yards to the Rifles, including 236 through the air.  The positive for the “D” was the five turnovers they created.

The Edmonton Wildcats were also involved in a shootout in Week 1, coming back to beat the Edmonton Huskies 35-33, scoring 21 points in 5:23 in the final quarter for the win.

The Wildcats offence was balanced collecting 235 yards on the ground and 204 through the air.  Quarterback Jordan Olson completed 12 passes and two touchdowns.  Bray Josue led the running attack with 12 carries for 165 yards and a pair of majors.

Defensively however the Wildcats gave up 518 total yards, including 323 yards on the ground alone.  They created two turnover on downs and sacked the Huskies three times.

Sunday’s game in Regina has all the makings of a ground and pound game with plenty of points.  Can the defences adjust and play a lot better than in Week 1 will be the main question.

Last season these two clubs also met in Week 2 of the PFC season in the rain in Regina.  The Wildcats scored a 19-14 victory.  The Thunder scored all 14 points in the second half.

Back in 2013, these clubs tied 24-24 in Edmonton.

Sunday’s kick-off is set for 1:00pm in Regina.
