The hottest rivalry in the BCFC opens the season

The 2015 season will open on Saturday as all six teams will be in action.

The first game of the new Canadian Junior Football League season, is also the BCFC Game of the Week when the VI Raiders host the Langley Rams at 4:00pm.

A year ago with the unbalanced schedule these two rivals met each other three times, the Rams winning twice at home.  The lone Raiders victory was on home turf in a thrilling 52-44 victory, handing the Rams their first loss of the regular season in 2014.

Overall in the three meetings the Rams outscored the Raiders 141-102.

The ground attack swung in the favour of the Rams as they collected 333 yards, compared to the Raiders 245 yards.

However through the air, the Raiders were dominant.  Liam O’Brien compiled 975 yards through the air, compared to the Rams 703 yards.  O’Brien torched the Rams completing 61% of his passes and threw for five touchdowns.  The All-Canadian quarterback will return this season.

Last season Dylan Tucker was the starting pivot for the Rams.  In his two meetings against the Raiders he recorded 27 completions for 411 yards and threw four majors.  He was injured in their final meeting.

Tucker is back with the Rams this season and is fighting for the starting role.

This will be the second straight year these two teams have met to open the season.  Last year in Langley the Rams held onto a 44-36 win, going on to finish 2014 with a 7-3 record.  The Raiders finished 5-5.

Traditionally these rivals meet early in the season.  Last year was Week 1, in 2013 the Rams beat the Raiders 36-28 in Week 3 in Nanaimo.    In Week 2 of the 2012 these two powerhouses played to 31-31 tie.

Since 2007 the Raiders are 5-2-1 against the Rams in the first meeting of the season and 3-1-1 in Nanaimo.

Since 2005 these two powerhouse teams have combined to win all 10 BCFC Cullen Cup championships.

This season the Rams are defending their BCFC title and will once again be led by Head Coach Jeff Alamolhoda who has compiled a 26-13 regular season record since taking over in 2011.  Meanwhile the Raiders have their second new head coach in as many years as Jerome Erdman takes over from a fired Brian Ridgeway.
