The last time two teams faced each other so closely in a Canadian Bowl

The 2014 Canadian Bowl will feature two teams that faced each other just two seasons ago when the Saskatoon Hilltops beat the Langley Rams 23-21.

The last time two teams matched up this closely together was in 1997 and 1998 when the Regina Rams met the Okanagan Sun in back to back Canadian Bowls.

In 1997 the Sun hosted the national championship at the Apple Bowl but lost 23-20 in a dramatic overtime game.

After the Rams scored 17 points in the second quarter, they led 17-3 heading into the fourth quarter, before the Sun scored 14 points in the final frame to tie the game, sending it to OT.  The Rams scored six points in the extra frame and won.

In the loss Sun running back Rob Arnold rushed 25 times for 244 yards and a touchdown.  Terrance Huston carried just three times for 48 yards, while Greg Korstrom carried three times for 22 and a major.  The Sun gathered 363 yards on the ground, comparted to just 100 through the air.

The Rams were led by running back Ikenna Ngoka who rushed 19 times for 115 yards and a touchdown.  Jason Clermont rushed five times for a major and caught three passes for 70 yards.  Quarterback Chad Ehman finished 17 for 32 and 231 yards.

The following year (1998) the Rams blew out the Sun on their home field 36-13.  Clermont was tremendous with eight receptions for 124 yards and two touchdowns.

On the ground Chad Olynick finished with 16 carries for 77 yards and a pair of majors.

Quarterback Mike Wong completed 19 of 25 passes for 269 yards and threw the two touchdown passes to Clermont.

The Sun scored just one touchdown as Steve Zamudio rumbled into the end zone from two yards out.  Huston rushed 21 times for 120 yards.

Two Sun quarterbacks Chris Orban and Zack Silverman combined for 14 completions for 174 yards and three interceptions.

Following their 1998 championship the Rams moved to the University of Regina and the Windsor AKO Fratmen beat the Sun in the Canadian Bowl, before the Sun finally won it in 2000.

On Saturday November 8th the Langley Rams make their third appearance in the Canadian Bowl in pursuit of their first national championship, while the Saskatoon Hilltops are vying for their 17th national title.  Kick-off at McLeod Park Stadium is set for 1:00pm.
