The Hilltops, Huskies and Colts all win

Week 7 of the PFC saw two upsets and a blow out as the Saskatoon Hilltops, Calgary Colts and Edmonton Huskies claimed victory.

The biggest upset of the weekend was in Regina as the Colts beat the Thunder 20-13.  Colts head coach Matt Blokker got a small measure of revenge after losing the Canadian Bowl on that very field last November.

The Colts threw the ball extremely well as quarterback Brett Hunchak finished 19 of 29 for 254 yards and found Jevon Cottoy in the end zone.  Cottoy led all receivers with 136 yards on seven catches.  Xavier Ramsey chipped in with four catches for 50 yards.

On the ground Cam Fox ate up some valuable yards and time on the clock carrying 22 times for 62 yards and a touchdown.

Kicker Marshall Broom connected on two field goals, including a 45 yarder.

Defensively the Colts were solid allowing just two points in the second half and created six turnovers.  Colton Burr made game high eight solo tackles and intercepted a pass, while Jakub Jakoubek made five tackles and assisted on seven others.  He also recovered a fumble and knocked a pass down.

Keiko King, Joel Johnson, Logan Wall and Tariq LaChance also recovered fumbles and Chris Friesen intercepted a pass.

Saturday night the Colts (2-4) will stay on the road and tangle with the Edmonton Wildcats (3-3) at 7:00pm.

The Regina Thunder fall for just the second time this season, both games on home turf.

They outgained the Colts with 338 offensive yards, most of which through the air.  Quarterback Jaeden Marwick played just the first half and finished 18 of 23 for 169 yards and threw a touchdown.  He was knocked out of the game, so in the second half Spencer Mack was 10 of 19 for 103 yards, and had a key fumble late in the game.

Both Preston Bews and Kasim Ocaya each caught nine balls, Bews for 109 yards and Ocaya for 81.  Thomas Bresciani hauled in the lone touchdown, a five yard reception.

The Thunder ground attack didn’t have much luck with only 87 yards.  Matt Frass leading the way with 35 yards on six carries.

Two missed field goals hurt the Thunder as William McGee connected on one of three attempts.

On the defensive side Brandon Whitehouse led the club with six solo tackles and sack.  Marcus Hall had the lone interception, while Dustin Erbach jumped on a fumble and tallied four solo tackles.  Linebacker Brett Selinger chipped in with five solo tackles.

The Thunder (4-2) will travel to Edmonton to face the Huskies (2-4) on Sunday.

The Saskatoon Hilltops blasted the Winnipeg Rifles at home on Sunday, recording their fourth win of the season in a 48-23 victory.

The Rifles actually outgained the Hilltops 417-382, but the home side used a balance attack to have their success.

Quarterback Jared Andreychuck was solid finishing 14 of 23 for 213 yards and threw a touchdown pass to Evan Kopchynski.   He spread the ball to eight different receivers, Evan Turkington and Chad Braun each hauling in four passes.

The ground game was firing as the PFC leading rusher Wayndel Lewis rushed 13 times for a game high 66 yards and two touchdowns.  Logan Fischer also punched it in the end zone on two carries and 59 yards.

25 Hilltop defenders made at least one stop on Sunday and three players made interceptions.  Tom Schnitzler picked off a pass and returned it 20 yards for a major.  Blake Herman also had a pick six, but for his he had to rumble 50 yards to the house.  Arnold Osam also intercepted a pass.

Aaron Evans, Schnitzler and Hermann each had a sack and Bobby Ehman recovered a fumble.

The Hilltops (4-2) will face the Rifles (3-3) again on Sunday, but this time in Winnipeg in the last half of a home and home.

The Winnipeg Rifles tallied over 400 yards of total offense, mostly due to the passing game.  Quarterback Tyler Vieira completed 19 of 27 for 273 yards and threw three touchdown passes, all of them caught by Niclas Bembenek.  Kurt Goodrich hauled in a game high nine passes for 105 yards.

The ground game recorded 191 yards, led by Victor St. Pierre-Laviolette and his seven carries for 73 yards.  Joel North carried 12 times, but only managed 39 yards.

Defensively the Rifles forced two interceptions as Jason Kelly records his Conference leading fifth pick, while Jordan Gauthier also intercepted a pass.  Brooks Falloon tallied five solo tackles and Joshua Onyebuchi had four.

The Rifles (3-3) will get their opportunity for revenge immediately when they host the Hilltops (4-2) on Sunday afternoon.

Back on Saturday night in the Battle of Edmonton Part 2, the Huskies claimed a 50-36 victory, avenging last weekend’s loss to the Wildcats.

This week the offense tallied 428 yards, led by the one man wrecking crew Jimmie Airey.  He caught six passes for 124 yards and two touchdowns.  Then on the ground, he had a game high 127 yards on 11 carries and scored.  He recorded 251 all-purpose yards.

Quarterback Trevor Erdmann finished 14 of 28 for 249 yards and threw three touchdowns.  Airey caught two of them and Marc LaPlante caught a 57 yard touchdown pass.

Kicker Jonathan Heiderbrecht was a perfect 4-4 in field goal attempts.

The Huskies defense even got in on the scoring as Jassen Brown recovered a fumble and returned it 24 yards for a TD and had three sacks. Branden Modin made seven solo tackles and had a pair of sacks; while Brandt Kolybaba tallied a game high nine tackles.

The Huskies (2-4) will host the Regina Thunder (4-2) on Sunday.

The Edmonton Wildcats did see a number of terrific individual efforts on Saturday night in their third loss of the season.

Offensively David Adebayo rushed 17 times for 123 yards and tallied a pair of touchdowns.   Brad Quartel gobbled up six passes for 187 yards and a score.

Quarterback Jordan Olson was 13 of 27 for 283 yards and threw the TD pass to Quartel.

Kicker Ideen Samadi was two of three in field goal attempts, including nailing one from 43 yards out.

The Cats defense put points on the board as well after Ryan Doram intercepted a pass and returned it 52 yards for a touchdown.  Linebacker Brett Morrow led the charge with seven solo tackles and Jalahni Knorren collected five.  Mike Hanson and Dylan Wright each had a sack and Rashaad Robinson and Wright each recovered a fumble.

The Wildcats (3-3) now prepare for a date with the Calgary Colts (2-4) on Saturday night in Edmonton.
