Week 11 is in the books and the CJFL is proud to announce the Players of the Week as selected by the three Conferences.
Offensive Players of the Week
Prairie Conference
REC Mekhi Tyrell – Edmonton Wildcats
Despite the setback last weekend receiver Mekhi Tyrell was simply outstanding and Mr. Offence for the Wildcats. He hauled in 11 receptions for 160 yards and made one carry for another 23 yards. In all, he accounted for 183 total offensive yards. This is the second time this season Tyrell has been named the top offensive player in the Prairie Conference.
BC Conference
REC Zion Brown – Westshore Rebels
What can you say about the season Zion Brown has turned in for the Rebels? He’s been incredible and added to his impressive season stats this past weekend with another 14 receptions for 160 yards and five more touchdown catches. His five, gives him 18 on the campaign, tying a CJFL record for most touchdown receptions in a single season. Congratulations Zion!
Ontario Conference
QB Matthew Guenette – St. Clair Saints
In helping to lock up the top seed and earn the Saints home field advantage throughout the Ontario Conference playoffs, quarterback Matthew Guenette was locked and loaded as he completed 24 of his 34 pass attempts for 415 yards and six touchdowns for a quarterback efficiency rating of 158.3 against the visiting Beefeaters. His 35 touchdown passes on the season set a new Ontario Conference record for touchdowns in a single season. Congratulations Matthew! This is also the third time he’s won this weekly award.
Defensive Players of the Week
Prairie Conference
DB Jake Mayo – Regina Thunder
A 34-yard interception return for a touchdown with 2:44 left in the game from Jake Mayo helped the Regina Thunder move back into first place in the Conference. The pick was his second of the game to complement his four tackles and one knockdown, giving him the best defensive performance of the week.
BC Conference
DB Stirling Henry – VI Raiders
Stirling Henry was part of a Raiders defence that completely shutout down the Valley Huskers last weekend and punched their ticket to the postseason. Henry compiled 3.5 sacks from his defensive back position, made three tackles, assisted on two others and recovered a fumble.
Ontario Conference
DL Jaylin Burnett – St. Clair Saints
For the fourth time this season, Jaylin Burnett wins this Conference recognition. He was once again a force to be reckoned with as he wreaked havoc in the London backfield all night long as the Saints defeated the Beefeaters and claimed first place. Burnett compiled six tackles (three solo and two tackles for loss) along with adding two quarterback sacks for a total of 15 defensive points.
Special Teams Players of the Week
Prairie Conference
K/P Shawn Green – Regina Thunder
In a game where flipping the field was very important, Shawn Green played a major factor on Saturday night. He made 11 punts, averaging 30.7 net yards and even made two special teams tackles. He also put points on the board connecting on a 35-yard second quarter field goal and nailed all three convert attempts.
BC Conference
PK Brady Harper – Prince George Kodiaks
The Prince George Kodiaks clinched the third seed in the BC Conference and Brady Harper had a big impact in their lopsided win this past weekend. He made all three field goal attempts and eight converts to help put 17-points on the board.
Ontario Conference
PK Nikolas Vecchio – Sault Ste. Marie Cougars
In keeping their playoff hopes alive, the Cougars relied heavily on the leg of kicker Nikolas Vecchio in a big road win in the nation’s capital. He connected on five of his six field goal attempts with the longest coming from 36 yards. He was also perfect on all five of his convert attempts for a total of 20 points.
