Week 10 saw three very interesting outcomes in the BC Conference as the playoff picture starts to come into focus.
VI Raiders 10
Westshore Rebels 8
In a rain drenched game the Raiders upset their island rivals on Saturday night in a very low scoring affair despite a late push by the Rebels.
The Raiders found success on the ground rushing for a total of 207 yards led by Rhonde Lyle and his 20 rushes for 121 yards and scored the home sides only touchdown which came in the third quarter. Brayden Jupe helped move the ball down the field in the passing game completing 15 passes for 191 yards.
Defensively the Raiders pitched a shutout for three quarters and for the most part contained the Rebels passing attack. They held the Conference’s top quarterback Gavin Session to 168 yards and Tani Wisdom tallied the lone sack.
The only other Raiders scoring came in the second quarter when Cole McQueen knocked through a 16-yard field goal, the only points of the first half.
It wasn’t until the fourth quarter that the Rebels got on the board. Session hit Zion Brown for a touchdown strike, then converted on the two-point conversion but it was too little, too late and they fall for the second straight week.
With the win the Raiders (3-4-1) stay in the playoff hunt and will visit the Valley Huskers (3-4-1) for a massive game with playoff positioning on the line on Saturday afternoon. The Rebels (6-3) will play their final game of the regular season this weekend when they host the Langley Rams (2-5-1).
Valley Huskers 56
Kamloops Broncos 14
The Huskers amassed 601 yards of total offence en route to their third win of the season and have started to find their stride having been unbeaten in their last three games and have two left on the regular season schedule, both at home.
Saturday night in Kamloops they did most of their damage on the ground to the tune of 414 yards. Quarterback Key’Shaun Dorsey rushed for a game high 118 yards while Jawad Harb added another 110 along with a touchdown. Rogan Vergata also got into the endzone for a major. Through the air Dorsey completed 10 passes, four of them for touchdowns and Vergata also added a TD pass. Receiver Peyton Lake hauled in three of those majors and Agisha Halisi and Trey White each had another score.
All that said, the tone of the game was set very early by the Huskers defence. Raiden Mastin intercepted a pass on the Broncos opening possession and returned it 40-yards for a pick-six. He also tallied five tackles, had a sack and a knockdown.
The Broncos touchdowns were scored on a Carter Moberg strike to Ty Holmes and running back Dexter Malo rushed in for a major.
This coming weekend the Huskers (3-4-1) will host the VI Raiders (3-4-1) in a game that could determine a playoff spot, and the Broncos (0-8) play their final road game, heading to Prince George to meet the Kodiaks (4-3-1).
Okanagan Sun 94
Langley Rams 0
It was the most lopsided game in the Conference this season as the Sun completely dismantled the visiting Rams.
They scored a total of 12 touchdowns, including two Jordayne Falconer punt returns for scores and a Hollis Walter pick-six on the defensive side.
Quarterback Liam Kroeger connected on six touchdown passes, two to Seth Famakinde and ran for another. Running back Gerren Hardisty collected 82 yards and becomes the first back in the CJFL to reach the 1000-yard plateau.
This coming weekend the Sun (9-0) enjoy a bye week while the Rams (2-5-1) fight for their playoff lives with a game in Westshore with the Rebels (6-3).
