St. Clair Saints 75
London Beefeaters 39
The Saints win the Ontario Conference title for the third straight season after a blowout win over their rivals the Beefeaters on Saturday night.
The big story coming into the game was that All-Star quarterback Maurice Sodja would not play after suffering an injury the week prior in a semi-final win over Ottawa...enter Matthew Guenette and the Saints didn’t miss a beat.
The backup pivot was masterful dissecting the Beefeater defence throwing for 377 yards on 23 completions and an eye-popping six touchdowns. Jesse Burella caught two of those majors on the only two receptions he made. Cameron St. Kitts-Park, Riley Sagriff, Tai Colquhoun and Darius France hauled in the others.
On the ground Burella added two more touchdowns, finishing off the game with four in total. Guenette rushed for a touchdown and Petyon Harris added another in the lopsided win. All-Star running back MJ Doyle-Marshall didn’t play.
The Beefeaters offence had the biggest and most successful offensive production day against what is usually a very stingy Saints defence. They collected 479 offensive yards with a good balance of run and pass. Quarterback Brody Fairbairn threw for 238 yards on 20 completions and three touchdowns to Jagger Horst, Karson Douglas, and Nick Szigeti. Horst was by far his favourite target as he made seven receptions for 137 yards. Fairbairn also ran for a touchdown and LJ Dyer was outstanding gaining 140 yards on 23 carries and had score.
With the victory the Saints will host the Canadian Bowl for the first time since 2017 and first time at St. Clair College. The game is set for Saturday November 9th at 7:00pm at Acumen Stadium.
