Home cooking proved to be a factor this past weekend with all three home teams collecting a win in the Prairie Conference.
Saskatoon Hilltops 57
Winnipeg Rifles 14
The Hilltops tallied 21 points in both the second and fourth quarters en route a lopsided victory over the visiting Rifles on Sunday afternoon.
The game started quickly when Daniel Fountaine returned the opening kick-off 95 yards for a touchdown, setting the tone of what was to come.
Their offence was highlighted by five rushing touchdowns by five different players and in total the ground attack gained 253 yards. Corbin Edden led the way with 132 yards on 17 carries and scored a touchdown. Fountaine, quarterback Trey Reider, Charlie Molder and offensive lineman Ryan Adamko added majors on the ground.
Through the air Reider threw for 168 yards on 16 completions and threw a touchdown to offensive lineman Jeremy Funk from two-yards out.
Defensively they forced five turnovers, four of them were interceptions. Dalton Urban was terrific picking off a pass, and recovering a fumble returning it 39 yards for a touchdown.
The Rifles only touchdown came on a passing play from quarterback Josh Charison finding Asher Neuffeld from seven yards out in the fourth quarter.
Next weekend the Hilltops (5-0) entertain the Edmonton Wildcats (0-5) and the Rifles (0-5) welcome the Calgary Colts (3-2).
Regina Thunder 51
Edmonton Wildcats 16
Sunday afternoon the Edmonton Wildcats took to the field with heavy hearts after the tragic and sudden passing of Offensive Line coach Ben Fairbrother. The former Saskatchewan Roughrider and BC Lion was on the coaching staff over the course of four seasons and made invaluable contributions to the Wildcats, with his legacy being felt for years to come.
With their minds no doubt elsewhere, the Wildcats gave up 24 points in the first quarter to the Thunder and found in difficult to focus.
Through the air, Thunder quarterback Carter Moberg threw for 183 yards on 13 completions and found Ben Walz and Peter Boersch for a touchdown. Meanwhile on the ground Mitchell Tanchak rushed for a pair of majors and Sadik Sadik added one of his own.
Defensively the Thunder forced eight turnovers including two interceptions by Lorrin LeBlanc while Devin Baumann blocked two kicks.
Both Wildcat scores came courtesy of a passing touchdown. First Marcos Soltero hit Max Taylor for a 75-yard catch and run for a touchdown, then back-up pivot Julien Beaulieu connected with Jacob St. Hilaire on a six-yard strike.
Next weekend the Thunder (4-1) will play at the Edmonton Huskies (3-2) and the Wildcats (0-5) visit the Saskatoon Hilltops (5-0).
Calgary Colts 24
Edmonton Huskies 16
The Colts recorded a massive win on Sunday, scoring 17 of their 24 points in the second half, reclaiming the tiebreaker over the Huskies in the standings.
Oddly enough, the Huskies outgained the Colts in total offensive yards and time of possession, but had trouble finishing off drives.
Offensively for the Colts, they predominately used the passing attack to move the football down the field gaining 205 yards. Quarterback Isaiah Klein threw their only touchdown pass, finding Quinn Fedoroff in the endzone. On the ground Zion Dogbe-Brown added a third quarter touchdown on a one-yard plunge.
Also in the third quarter Yve Saintus picked off a pass and returned 60-yards for a pick-six, essentially putting game out of reach with under a minute to go in the frame.
In the fourth quarter the Huskies did get into the endzone on a two-yard TD run by Titus Fagnan, but their comeback attempt fell short as they ran out of time. Their only other major was in the second quarter when Fagnan hauled in a six-yard touchdown reception from quarterback Wyatt Matson.
Next weekend the Colts (3-2) will make the long trip to Winnipeg to meet the Rifles (0-5) and the Huskies (3-2) welcome the Regina Thunder (4-1).
