The top individual performances from this past weekend

The CJFL is pleased to announce the Week 5 Players of the Week after another weekend filled with incredible individual performances.

Fans can vote for their selection of the CJFL Fans Choice Player of the Week.  Polls are open now and close on Wednesday at 5:00pm PST.

Offensive Players of the Week

Ontario Conference
QB Owen Cowan – Ottawa Sooners

Already in midseason form, Owen Cowan led an aerial assault against the visiting Hurricanes in the Sooners’ home opener in the nation’s capital.  In completing 15 of his 20 pass attempts, Cowan threw for 332 yards and five touchdowns for an incredible quarterback rating of 196.3.

BC Conference
RB Elelyon Noa – Okanagan Sun

This past Saturday night Elelyon shredded the Prince George defence every time he touched the ball.  He scored a total of four touchdowns and finished the game with 291 all-purpose yards.  Most of those were on the ground as he carried the ball 14 times for 216 yards and three majors, including a highlight reel 91-yard dash to the endzone.  He also caught five passes for 75 yards and scored on an incredible 33-yard screen pass, breaking the ankles of defenders along the way.

Prairie Conference
RB Sadik Sadik – Regina Thunder

The Thunder offence was very balanced on Sunday in their road win with the run game led by Sadik Sadik.  He rushed 15 times and gained 194 yards and had a touchdown in the shutout victory.

Defensive Players of the Week

Ontario Conference
LB Noah Nelson – Ottawa Sooners

Picking up where he left off last season, Noah Nelson was a one-man wrecking crew as he constantly thwarted the Hamilton offence.  He accounted for 12 tackles, including eight solo and two tackles for a loss for a conference high 20 defensive points.

BC Conference
DB Dean Meurren – Langley Rams

The Rams secured their third win of the year using and strong, fast defensive push in Kamloops on Saturday night.  Defensive back Dean Meurren was outstanding in the secondary making five solo tackles, but his 70-yard interception return for a touchdown stood out and was one of the most impactful plays of the weekend.

Prairie Conference
DL Kai Kukurudza – Saskatoon Hilltops

The Hilltops defence didn’t give up much on the weekend, holding down any attempt by the Winnipeg Rifles to move the football.  Kai Kukurudza was one of the best on the field on the defensive side making five solo tackles, adding two sacks, three tackles for a loss and two assisted stops.

Special Teams Players of the Week

Ontario Conference
KR Daniel Bumbaco – St. Clair Saints

Daniel Bumbaco played a key role in constantly giving his team’s offence great starting position all afternoon.  He returned one kickoff for 41 yards and returned three punts for another 12 yards as the defending Ontario champs looked primed for another run at the Conference title as they ruined London’s home opener.

BC Conference
KR Grady Andrea – Valley Huskers

Despite suffering a loss this past weekend kick returner Grady Andrea set his offence up with good field position against the visiting Westshore Rebels.  Andrea returned six kick-offs averaging 26.1 yards with his longest return being 36 yards.

Prairie Conference
K Shawn Green – Regina Thunder

When a Regina Thunder drive stalled on Sunday, they turned to the leg of kicker Shawn Green who finished with an impressive day.  By himself he scored half of the Thunder’s points on Sunday, knocking through five field goals and was a perfect 3-3 in converts for a total of 18 points scored.  His longest field goal was 38 yards.

Now you can vote for the Fans Choice Player of the Week.  The polls are open until Wednesday at 5:00pm PST and the winner will be announced on the CJFL Instagram page, @CJFLFootball
