Two blow-outs and one game that came down to the wire in the Prairie Conference this past weekend.
Saskatoon Hilltops 47
Winnipeg Rifles 1
The Hilltops rolled into Winnipeg and dominated the Rifles giving up only a rouge in the third quarter winning by 46-points.
Offensively quarterback Trey Reider was great completing 12 of 17 for 216 yards and threw a pair of touchdowns to Drake Douglas who made seven catches for 155 yards. Meanwhile the ground game accounted for three touchdowns. Corbin Ebben rushed 20 times for 104 yards and a score and Charles Sawi and offensive lineman Ryan Adamko also rushed for a touchdown.
On the defensive side the Hilltops forced six turnovers highlighted by a 35-yard pick six by Nathan Young. Jackson Dean intercepted a pass and returned it 81 yards however came up short of the endzone. Kai Kukurudza had five tackles and two sacks.
Next weekend the Hilltops (2-0) stay on the road and visit the Calgary Colts (1-1) and the Rifles (0-2) visit the Regina Thunder (2-0).
Regina Thunder 36
Edmonton Wildcats 0
The Thunder defence pitched a shutout on Sunday giving up only nine first downs and forced six turnovers. It was a complete team effort with 13 different players recording at least one tackle.
Offensively the Thunder had a very balanced attack on the ground and through the air. Sadik Sadik was outstanding on the ground with 15 carries for 194 yards and scored a touchdown.
Through the air quarterback Carter Moberg completed 20 passes for 291 yards and threw touchdown passes to Austin Wood and Tanner Donovel.
As a team they gathered 522 total yards.
Next weekend the Thunder (2-0) host the Winnipeg Rifles (0-2) for their home opener and the Wildcats (0-2) host the Edmonton Huskies (1-1) in their home opener.
Edmonton Huskies 25
Calgary Colts 23
Despite a Colts touchdown with under 30 seconds to go on Saturday, a Huskies 36-yard field goal by Laine Santos with just over a minute to play held up as the game winner, giving the Huskies their first win of the season.
Santos was perfect on all three of his field goal attempts while the Huskies scored both of their touchdowns on the ground. Carson Eddy rushed 22 times for 154 yards while Nolan Baragar and Kieran Beeler each got into the endzone.
Where the Huskies scored their touchdowns on the ground, the Colts used the air. Quarterback Isaiah Klein completed 14 of 16 for 186 yards and threw a pair of touchdowns to Quinn Fedoroff and another to Sam Duerr. Though they didn’t score on the ground, running back Zion Dodge-Brown gained 146 yards on 17 carries.
Next weekend the Huskies (1-1) visit their crosstown rivals the Wildcats (0-2) and the Colts (1-1) welcome the Saskatoon Hilltops (2-0).
