With southern Ontario getting hammered by heavy rain and blustery winds the Ontario Conference still kicked off this past weekend.

St Clair Saints 37
London Beefeaters 7

With heavy rain in the area and a drenched field the Saints and Beefeaters opened the season in a rematch of last year’s Conference title game that was decided by one point.

Saturday the Saints used a dominate ground assault gaining 381 yards and three touchdowns as they powered to the win.  MJ Doyle-Marshall carried the ball 11 times for 143 yards and scored twice while quarterback Maurice Sodja also rushed 11 times for 131 yards and a had a major.  Sodja added 11 completions for 185 yards and found Tai Colquhoun and Cameron St Kitts-Park for touchdown receptions.

The Beefeaters found it difficult to move the football against the Saints defence with their lone touchdown coming in the second quarter on a pass from quarterback Brody Fairbairn to Luca Rosiello.

Next weekend the Saints (1-0) host the Quinte Skyhawks (1-0) and the Beefeaters (0-1) visit the Hamilton Hurricanes (0-1).

Ottawa Sooners 47
Hamilton Hurricanes 21

The Sooners celebrated their home opener using a 23-point third quarter while third year pivot Owen Cowan put on a passing clinic in the lopsided win.

Cowan completed 15 of 20 passes for 322 yards and five touchdowns spreading the ball to five different receivers.  Incredibly Ethan Wilson caught three passes, all of them for touchdowns gaining 144 yards, including a 75-yard pass and run for a major.  Christian Phillips and Bryson Cheslock also caught touchdown passes.

On the ground Rashaad Johnson had a massive game with 13 carries for 171 yards and scored a touchdown, diving at the cone and just breaking the plane.

The Hurricanes couldn’t keep up with the Sooners offensive push gaining 210 yards.  Quarterback Atwal Amrit threw for 107 yards and hit Jeremy Hicks for a touchdown and ran for one as well.

The defence got on the scoreboard when Jaedenn Marchesano scooped up a fumble and returned into the endzone.

Next weekend the Sooners (1-0) will host the GTA Grizzlies (0-1) and the Hurricanes (0-1) look to Pack the Park for their home opener against the London Beefeaters (0-1).

Quinte Skyhawks 20
GTA Grizzlies 0

Due to a massive rain storm that hit the Toronto area on Saturday there are no stats available for the summary of this game.

Next weekend the Skyhawks (1-0) visit the St. Clair Saints (1-0) and the Grizzlies (0-1) hit the road to face the Ottawa Sooners (1-0).
