The defending Cullen Cup champion Westshore Rebels will open their BC Conference title defence on July 20th.  It’s the first time they begin a title defence since 2017 and one player in particular is ready to do whatever he can to keep that Cup on the island.

Linebacker Bryce Reuther is a local product who turned to the CJFL and the Rebels when the Simon Fraser University football program shutdown.  He has made the most of his opportunities, now entering his second CJFL campaign.   Last year he made 11 tackles, tallied three sacks, had a pair of interceptions and forced two fumbles.

The strength of his game is the coverage he can provide on the defensive side.   He has the speed to track down a running back trying to get to the corner or the blow through an open hole to reach the quarterback as they drop back to pass.  His ability to read the field is one of the best on the Rebels and has served him well.

He is hoping his Rebels can have another successful season in defending their Cullen Cup.  His personal goal however happens even before the season starts as he is hoping to be named to the CJFL Top 50 list which will be announced on July 14th.

In his first season with the Rebels last year there are several outstanding memories that he has. In picking just one that stands out, Reuther says his favourite play was during the first drive against the Langley Rams in their semi-final game.  He intercepted the very first pass the Rams tried to make as they were backed up in their own end.  His interception was very indicative of how he can read the whole field and his explosiveness to the ball.

When remembering his favourite game from last year he goes back to the Cullen Cup championship against the Okanagan Sun.  After halftime Reuther and the Rebels defence took over the game and completely shutdown the Sun offence. Their performance punched their ticket to the 2023 Canadian Bowl.

The Rebels will open the new CJFL season on July 20th when they visit the Kamloops Broncos.
