Football Day in Canada all weekend

The second half of the doubleheader kicks off Saturday afternoon part of Football Day in Canada, a national celebration happening from coast to coast.

Last week the Thunder needed overtime to beat the Hilltops 29-21 in an instant classic. The Thunder tied the game with time winding down, then scored a touchdown and 2-point conversion in overtime for the eight-point win.

Both teams are very evenly matched, and this rematch will no doubt be just as good as the game last week.

Saturday afternoon is the only match-up between the Sun and Huskers this season and should be a very entertaining game.  The Sun are undefeated while the Huskers have won two straight games and four of their last five to pull to within two points of the top ranked Sun. 

Last week the Sun snuck by the Westshore Rebels in a come from behind road win.  The Huskers on the other hand went on the road to Vancouver Island and scored 62 points against the Raiders behind seven touchdown passes from quarterback Josh Janssen.

For the second time this season the Rams and Raiders will battle, but this time on the Island after the Rams held serve on their homefield on August 27th in a 24-13 victory.  In that game the Rams defence pitched a first half shutout while their offence put up 14 points which was the difference. 

The Rams are coming off a lopsided win in Prince George for their third of the season. The Raiders scored an impressive 41 points last week but lost as they surrendered 62.

Prince George Kodiaks @ Kamloops Broncos – Saturday September 17, 6:00pm – Hillside Stadium | WATCH HERE

The Broncos and Kodiaks play the first of a home-and-home over the next two weekends with massive playoff implications.  Saturday night will be played at Hillside Stadium and is the second time these two match-up.  In Prince George back on August 6th the Broncos rode to a 35-20 victory doing most of their damage through the air with quarterback Reid Vankoughnett who threw for 294 yards and two touchdowns. 

Just two points separates these two teams in the standings.  The Broncos are coming off a bye week but have lost three straight while the Kodiaks have lost two in a row.

This is the only meeting of the regular season between these two teams and is a first-place showdown.  The Saints have steamrolled their way through the first five games with their closest margin of victory being eight points.  Meanwhile the Sooners have won four straight and sit two points behind the Saints for first in the Ontario Conference.

Calgary Colts @ Edmonton Huskies – Sunday September 18, 1:00pm – Jasper Place | WATCH HERE

This is a rematch from the first game of the season when the Huskies spoiled the Colts home opener with a 37-17 victory on August 14th.   That afternoon the Huskies scored 27 of their 37 points in the first half and never looked back. 

The Huskies are coming off a 25-22 win over their crosstown rivals the Wildcats for their second victory of the season.  The Colts were in Winnipeg and fought hard to battle back outscoring the Rifles 15-10 in the second half but lost 31-28 in a very entertaining game.

Sunday’s game is an important one as both these teams are fighting for playoff positioning.

The Rifles have won two straight and cracked the CJFL’s Top 10 Power Rankings this week after beating the Hilltops and Colts on their homefield.  They will hit the road looking for their first win away from Winnipeg and will face the Wildcats on Sunday afternoon.  This will be the first of two meetings this season between these two.

Where the Rifles have won two straight, the Wildcats are winless but played their best game of the season last weekend.   This is the first of three straight at home to wind down the season.

It’s a battle of winless teams in Quinte when the Grizzlies come to town.  The Skyhawks fell to the Hamilton Hurricanes last week 37-27.  The Grizzlies lost 40-7 in Ottawa.

This game is the first of a home-and-home as they will meet again next weekend in Toronto.

This is a massive game as both teams are tied in the standings with identical records. This is the first time they see each other this season and will play the rematch in London in two weeks for the regular season finale.  The defending champion Beefeaters have lost two straight while the Hurricanes have begun to heat up winning two in a row.
