The BC Conference concluded the regular season on Saturday highlighted by a first place showdown between the Sun and Rams that turned into a defensive struggle.

Neither team was able to gain the 100 yard plateau on the ground as each defence held the line.  The Sun ran for 94 yards while the Rams collected 66.  The teams combined for a total of 367 yards through the air, not much consider they are the top two offences in the Conference.

After a scoreless first quarter, the teams traded field goals in the second frame for a 3-3 tie at halftime.  After another scoreless third quarter the Sun scored 10 points in the final “Q” to win the game by seven.  Quarterback Dominic Britton found Mike O’Shea for the game’s lone touchdown to give the Sun the win.  The only other points the Sun offence could score was a pair of Liam Attwood field goals.

Speaking of kicks, the Rams scoring came via their place kicker as Tato Ferreyro-Araya connected on two field goals.

Defensively the Sun were led by linebacker Romario Reid and his six solo tackles, and a sack while Jonah Williams made four tackles and had an interception.  Meanwhile the Rams best defender was defensive back Ryan Barthelson who had three tackles, blocked a kick and recovered a fumble.

Despite the loss the Rams (7-1) still win the tiebreaker and clinch first place in the Conference and will host the Valley Huskers (4-4) in a BC semi-final, while the Sun (7-1) finish second and will welcome the VI Raiders (4-4) next weekend in the other semi-final.

Valley Huskers 24

Saturday afternoon the Raiders and Huskers went head to head with playoff positioning at stake as the winner would claim third place.   The Raiders collected a 28-point second quarter and never looked back clinching the third spot in the BC Conference.

Quarterback Jake Laberge was again the Raiders key to victory completing 16 passes for 303 yards and threw another three touchdown passes.  He found Marcel Grant twice for majors and hit Maren Bradbrooke for the other.   Laberge also ran for a touchdown, as did running back Jason Henderson on 12 carries.

Sean Murray had another big night defensively for the Raiders with a game high seven tackles and Ethan Moran chipped in with five.  Lennox Murray intercepted a pass.

The Huskers came alive in the second half down by 28 points.  Quarterback Josh Janssen finished with 19 completions, 266 yards and threw a pair of touchdown passes to Mateo Tuioti who hauled in a game high 10 passes for 128 yards.

Running back Brandon O’Connor scored the other Huskers major on the ground with 17 carries and 85 yards.

This coming weekend the Raiders (4-4) will travel to face the Okanagan Sun (7-1) in one Conference semi-final and the Huskers (4-4) will also go on the road and visit the Langley Rams (7-1) in the other semi.

Kamloops Broncos 18
Westshore Rebels 7

In the final game of the season for both teams the Broncos finally clinched a victory for the first time since 2017.

Their lone offensive touchdown came in the third quarter with Ayden Cummins rushing the ball into the end zone.  Also in the third the Broncos defence added to the scoreboard when Raffaele Caligiuri picked off a pass and returned it 58 yards for a major.

Broncos’ running back Cam Gregorczyk had a big game rushing 28 times for 120 yards.

The Rebels only score also came in the third quarter when Zach Lubin got into the end zone.

The Broncos and Rebels each finish the 2021 regular season with identical 1-7 records.

In an interesting and rare fact, the BC Conference saw teams share overall records.  The Rams and Sun each finished 7-1, the Raiders and Huskers at 4-4 and Broncos and Rebels at 1-7.
