The Thunder, Hilltops and Rifles get a weekend W

In perhaps the most important game in the CJFL this past weekend the defending champion Hilltops got the win they needed and now sit in sole possession of second place in the Prairie Conference.

Their running attack was key in this game gathering 285 yards most of which from Boston Davidsen who had the best CJFL game of his career with 31 carries, 221 yards and three touchdowns. Quarterback Damon Dutton was solid as well with 16 completions for 159 yards and threw a touchdown strike to Ethan Godson.

Konnor Johnson was again the best Hilltops defender with five tackles, an assist and intercepted a pass.  Matt Wist had four tackles and recovered a fumble.

The Huskies struggled on Sunday allowing 17 first quarter points, a deficit they could not overcome.  Offensively Declan O’Flaherty completed 26 passes for 306 yards and threw a pair of touchdown passes, one to De Shawn Le Jour and a four yard strike to Caleb Akerley.  Le Jour hauled in a game high seven passes for 114 yards.

On the ground Alex Gayle pounded the rock 22 times for 119 yards and scored a third quarter major.

Both teams will receive a Thanksgiving bye this coming weekend.  Following that the Hilltops (4-2) will host the Edmonton Wildcats (2-4) and the Huskies (4-2) will entertain the Regina Thunder (6-0).

It was an incredibly exciting finish on Sunday in Winnipeg as the Rifles pick up their second win of the campaign.  

Down 26-21 the Rifles had the ball on their own 52 yard line with 56 second remaining.  They would march 58 yards for the winning touchdown on a third down 11-yard pass completion from Thomas Hubbard to Luke McMillan.

In all Hubbard threw three touchdown passes, a pair to McMillan and one to Sekina Scheibler and had 190 yards on the afternoon.

The Rifles defence also helped out and got on the scoreboard to open the game when Brayden Clarke recovered a fumble and rumbled 50 yards for a touchdown.    Keyshawn Gaskin also picked off a pass and had four tackles.  

The Colts let one slip away on Sunday as their defence forced five turnovers, including four interceptions.  They also got a score when Darius Redhead who recovered a fumble and returned it seven yards for a touchdown.   

Their only other touchdown was a 34 yard catch and run from quarterback Justin Verloop to Joel Pipke.  Verloop finished with 222 yards on 17 completions.

After this weekend’s bye the Rifles (2-4) and Colts (0-6) will play the second half of the home and home.

Edmonton Wildcats 17

It was another dominating win for the CJFL’s top ranked team jumping out to a 41-0 halftime lead.  Quarterback Carter Shewchuk returned to the line-up and completed 12 of 19 passes for 197 yards, finding Ryland Leichert, Rylan Sokul and Garion Miller for touchdowns.

Leichert was also dominating on the ground scoring two more touchdowns on 14 carries and 54 yards.

The Wildcats struggled moving the ball in the first half but finally saw some success after halftime.   Back-up quarterback Jonathon Ericson threw a touchdown pass to Jacob Milhailides and running back Jayden Sak scored on the ground.

Both teams will enjoy the Thanksgiving weekend with family before resuming the season on October 17th.  The Thunder (6-0) will visit the Edmonton Huskies (4-2) and the Wildcats (2-4) visit the Saskatoon Hilltops (4-2).
