The very best from Week 2 of the CJFL season

The CJFL is proud to announce the Football Canada Players of the Week for Week 2 of the regular season.

Offensive Players of the Week

Prairie Conference
QB Carter Shewchuk – Regina Thunder

The Thunder quarterback had himself a day playing in just the first half on Sunday.  He completed 15 of 17 passes for 258 yards and threw five touchdown passes during their route of the visiting Winnipeg Rifles.  His longest pass was an 81 yard touchdown strike in the second quarter.  He added two carries for 15 yards.

Ontario Conference
RB Jacob Savoni – St Clair Fratmen

Not a bad debut for Savoni this past Sunday despite seeing limited action in the Fratmen’s dismantling of the GTA Grizzlies.  He certainly made the most of his time on the field with 12 carries for an even 100 yards and collected three touchdowns in his CJFL debut.

Defensive Players of the Week

Prairie Conference
DB Justin McKerracher – Regina Thunder

You don’t see a defensive performance like this very often especially in only three quarters of play.  Justin McKerracher intercepted a pass and returned it 23 yards for a touchdown in the first quarter, then in the second frame followed that up by picking up a fumble and returning it 24 more yards for another touchdown.  He also collected three solo tackles and knocked down a pass.

Ontario Conference
DL Jordan Fletcher – London Beefeaters

What a debut for Fletcher for the defending Ontario champs.  He tied a team record with four sacks and added four solo tackles in the Beefeaters first game.

Special Teams Players of the Week

Prairie Conference
R Caleb Akerley – Edmonton Huskies

Part of the Huskies dominating win on Saturday night was the play of their special teams and in particular Caleb Akerly.  He returned three punts for 95 yards including an 84 yard return for a touchdown in the first quarter.

Ontario Conference
K/P Jake Holloway – St Clair Fratmen

It is not very often that a special teams player will outshine a teammate's kick return for a touchdown, but the Fratmen kicker did just that.  In proving to be a field position weapon Holloway averaged 63.3 gross yards on his nine kickoffs, four of which going for rouges and he connected on all eight of his converts. He averaged 49 yards on his two punts and helped out his own cause with a special teams tackle.
