Players can participate now

Attention CJFL Players! Welcome to the first ever CJFL Virtual Combine on now!  This is your chance to show off your skills and talents and be featured on the national stage; you never know who will be watching!

Participate in one event or all eight, it doesn’t matter which position you play and CJFL bragging rights are on the line!

RULES:

Any events that are deemed eligible for entry need to be submitted on video (using your phone is acceptable).  Please see the video requirements for each event below.

Upload your LABELLED videos to the google drive (you’ll need a Gmail account to do so).  CLICK HERE TO UPLOAD.

Ideally each player that “tackles” a Combine event does it on a lined football field and can be done at anytime.

The following rules for each event are inspired by the CFL Virtual Combine.  You can use your phone/tablet to video any of the events, but an actual video camera is ideal.

40 Yard Dash:

Attempts: Two

Description:
1 – The test must be conducted between the goal line and the 40-yard line.
2 – The player must run one test starting at the goal line and one test starting at the 40-yard line.
This ensures the player goes in each direction once to mitigate the impact of any tailwind.
3 – Player must start in a 3-point stance (either hand down).
4 – The player can be positioned with their hand on the front of the white line but not past the line.
5 – Must be set prior to start at least one second.
6 – No rolling starts.
7 – Time starts on runner’s first movement.
Times: Taken to the nearest hundredth of a second. E.g. 4.46 sec.

VIDEO (assuming there is only 1 camera) – Position camera/phone/tablet at the finish line so the video captures the player running towards the camera.

20 Yard Short Shuttle
A test for: Lateral quickness, start/stop quickness and agility.
Attempts: Two. Once starting left and once starting right.

Description: Runner will start in the middle of the course in a 3-point stance with one hand down (either hand). They will run 5 yards to the left touching the line with their left hand and race 10 yards back across his starting point to another line touching the line with their right hand and then race back to the starting point. Second time through, process is repeated in the opposite direction.

2 – The runner will straddle the starting line, feet equal distance from the starting line.
3 – Must start in a 3-point stance with either hand down on the middle of the line.
4 – Must be set prior to start at least one second.
5 – No rolling starts.
6 – Time starts on runner’s first movement.
7 – Only one can hand touch the ground at any given time.
8 – It is the responsibility of the player not to slip and adjust to the surface.
Times: Taken to the nearest hundredth of a second. E.g. 4.05 sec.

VIDEO – camera position far enough back so that the event can be captured in one shot without moving the camera.

3 Cone Drill
A test for: Evaluates player’s change of direction, balance and ability to get up to speed quickly.
Equipment: 3 cones or stationary objects
Attempts: Two.

Description: From the starting point, the player is in a 3-point stance (either hand down touching the line). They will run to the first line 5 yards straight ahead and touch the line with their right-hand pivoting and coming back to the starting line touching the starting line with their right hand and proceed back in the same direction. They will run around the far cone and head right 90 degrees and to another cone 5 yards away running around the cone, keeping the cone on their left-hand side, back to the 2nd cone, keeping the cone to their left-hand side, and on through the finish line.
1 – Test must be conducted starting on the 15-yard line and running towards the 20-yard line.
2 – A cone or a stationary object must be placed on the 20-yard line, then a second cone/stationary object measured exactly 5 yards from the first cone and placed on the 20- yard line at that point 5 yards away.
3 – Start in a 3-point stance with either hand down, hand must be behind the starting line.
4 – Must be set prior to start at least one second.
5 – No rolling starts.
6 – Time starts on runner’s first movement.
7 – While rounding the cones the player can never lean over and touch the ground with their hands, they will be disqualified for that attempt.
8 – It is the responsibility of the player not to slip and adjust to the surface.
Times: taken to the nearest hundredth of a second. E.g. 4.05 sec.

VIDEO – camera position far enough back so that the event can be captured in one shot without moving the camera.

Broad/Standing Long Jump
A test for: Explosiveness, check for correlation to Vertical Jump, body control.
Equipment: Tape measure. Measuring Stick
Attempts: Two

Description: The player will stand at the 15-yard line facing the nearest endzone along one of the hash marks. A measuring tape must be placed on the ground just beside where the player will be jumping. Both the start of the measuring tape and the player’s feet will be behind the white line of the 15-yard line. The measuring tape should extend towards the 10-yard line along the hash marks. From a standing position, the player jumps forward as far as he can. The measurement will be from the starting line (same place their toes started from) to the back of the foot (heal) that is closest to the starting line upon landing.
1 – When starting; Both feet are behind starting line, flat footed, no steps prior to jump.
2 – Player can use arms for momentum and feet can be together or slightly apart
3 – Players feet must remain behind the starting line until they leave on the jump.
4 – Upon landing, as long as player’s foot closest to the starting line remains planted, the player may fall forward.
- Disqualification occurs if the player skips their feet across the starting line on jump or when a player falls back towards the starting line.
Measurements: Taken to the nearest ¼ inch and given in Feet & Inches E.g. 9 ft and ¼ inch or 9 ft and ¾ inch.

VIDEO – camera position far enough back so that the event can be captured in one shot without moving the camera.

Bench Press
A test for: Upper Body Strength and balance
Attempts: One attempt at doing as many repetitions as possible using 225 lbs on the bar.
Equipment: Bench Press, Bar & Weights totaling 225 lbs.

Description: Ideally test is done using Olympic style weights, bar and collars but please use what you can. Players should have two volunteers for this test: a filmer and a spotter. The spotter may lift the weight off the rack and hand to the player with his arm extended. Anytime you are preparing for this test you should always warm up and have a qualified spotter behind you, or two – one on either side in case you fail in your last attempt. Also, we suggest you use collars on the bar if possible.
1 – Take up your position with your back on the bench.
2 – Feet flat on either side of the bench.
3 – Once the bar is lifted from the rack, shoulders, mid-back and tail bone should remain in contact with the bench at all times.
4 – Lower the bar to the chest and back to full arm extension.
- Minimal bouncing of bar off chest is permitted
- Must have full extension of arms on each rep
- Resting with arms fully extended during test is permitted

VIDEO – camera position should be near player so that the viewer can see the reps

A test for: Throwing accuracy
Attempts: Ten attempts to try and throw the football IN the garage can
Equipment: football, 1 garbage can

Description:  Participants throw from behind the goal line and throw the football into the garbage can sitting on the 30 yard line.  The participant has 10 attempts to try and “complete” as many passes into a garbage can.

VIDEO – camera position is near the garbage can.  Start video on the thrower and follow ball into garage can.  Careful not to get hit by the ball.

Sideline kicks:
A test for: kicking accuracy
Attempts: Three attempts of trying to land the ball as close to the sideline as possible
Equipment: footballs and a measuring tape

Description: Kickers will stand on the 55 yard line and angle a kick toward the sideline.  The goal is to keep the ball inbounds and have the ball stop moving before it goes out of bounds, trying to get the ball as close to the sideline as possible.   Once stopped, measure where the ball has stopped moving from the edge of the out of bounds sideline to the closest piece of the football.  Taken to the nearest ¼ inch and given in Feet & Inches

VIDEO – camera position is near the sideline.  Start video on the kicker and follow ball until it stops moving, ideally beside the sideline.  Careful not to get hit by the ball.
