The CJFL Quarterbacks Week continues.
Passing the football to pick up yardage is the quarterback’s primary job. Sure they are to conduct the offence, hand the ball off and read the defences, but passing is priority #1.
For a quarterback to have an outstanding regular season several things must line-up in his favour. First and foremost a strong offensive line to give the pivot time to drop back and throw is a must. Receivers that can catch the ball is also important, especially those receivers that can make a play even if the ball is thrown off the mark. A coaching staff recognizing the strengths of that quarterback to give him the best chance to succeed is required. And finally a little luck is also needed to have a season that would reflect in the CJFL record book.
Three quarterbacks in CJFL history have hit the 3,000 yard plateau in a single season, one of them needing just eight games to do so. Four of the top 5 all-time passing yards leaders in a single season hail from the BC Conference where they play a 10-game regular season which does give them the advantage over the other Conferences. That said, looking at the numbers it is impressive how these “gun slingers” have been able to dominate in a single season.
1 – Jordan Yantz – 3,243 yards for the VI Raiders (BCFC) in 2012
2 – Stephen Schuweiler – 3,050 yards for the Kamloops Broncos (BCFC) in 2015
3 – Ryan Marsch – 3,030 yards for the Winnipeg Rifles (PFC) in eight games in 2011
4 – Nate Cote (pictured) – 2,988 yards for the Victoria Rebels (BCFC) in 2007
5 – Jordan Yantz – 2,913 yards for the VI Raiders (BCFC) in 2010
Each day this week the CJFL will highlight a new Quarterback statistical category.
