Most passing yards in a CJFL career

Quarterbacks Week in the CJFL continues.

Arguably the most important job for a quarterback is to gobble up yards by passing the football.  In fact most experts would say that the measurement for a quarterback’s success is how many passing yards he has.

Passing yards are measured for a given completion as the number of yards from the original line of scrimmage and the point that the receiver was tackled, forced out of bounds, or entered the end zone for a touchdown.  Some quarterbacks just have a knack for finding a receiver to either throw to down the field, or to just dump it off to a running back leaking out of the backfield for a short gain.

A quarterback who did it better than anyone else during his CJFL career was Jordan Yantz who spent five seasons with the VI Raiders.  He is the only quarterback in league history to hit the 10,000 yard plateau in his career.  Perhaps more impressively is the fact that Yantz played sparingly during his rookie season of 2008, followed by a campaign in which the Raiders had Andrew Harris running the ball and no real need to pass. However in 2010 Yantz became the focal point of the Raiders’ offence and piled up the numbers and the yardage.

When looking at the top 5 all-time career leaders in passing yards, the city of Regina is very well represented with Yantz a Regina native, followed by John Makie and Dean Picton who played in the Queen City.   The top 5 are:

1 – Jordan Yantz (pictured) – 10,728 yards for the VI Raiders (BCFC) from 2008-2012

2 – John Makie – 9,370 yards for the Regina Thunder (PFC) and Vancouver Trojans (BCFC) from 2001-2004

3 – Dean Picton – 8,641 yards for the Regina Rams (PFC) from 1984-1988

4 – Tony Gagnon – 8,616 yards for the Saskatoon Hilltops (PFC) from 1980-1985

5 – Ryan Marsch – 7,701 yards for the Winnipeg Rifles (PFC) from 2009-2011, 2013

Each day this week a new category will be highlighted during Quarterbacks Week.
