The CJFL’s Defensive Backs Week continues…

Throughout CJFL history there have been some tremendous ball hawks that patrol their team’s secondary.   These players seem to have a nose for the football and often find themselves in the right position at the right time.  Not only that, but most of them have extremely good hands.

One of the most celebrated plays in football is the interception.  When a pick is made the entire defence on the field and even players on the bench join in on the celebration of the turnover.

Over time there has been no-one better in a single regular season then Larry Farrauto of the Hamilton Hurricanes in 1988.  That season he intercepted 13 passes which still stands as a CJFL single season record and he did it in only eight regular season games.   That record of 13 interceptions has stood for 32 years.

Incredibly the top 5 interceptions leaders in a single CJFL regular season all played in the 1980s and three of the five hail from the Ontario Conference.  They are:

1 – Larry Farrauto – 13 with the Hamilton Hurricanes (OFC) in 1988

2 – John Popplestone – 12 with the Fort Garry Lions (MJFC) in 1981

3 – Wayne Pierce – 12 with the Windsor AKO Fratmen (OFC) in 1987

4 – Chris Murawsky – 12 with the Ottawa Sooners (OFC) in 1985

5 – Doug Harding – 11 with the Calgary Colts (PFC) in 1982

Each day this week, a new category will be highlighted
