For the first time this season all three Conferences were in action during Week 3 of the CJFL season.  Here are the five takeaways from this past weekend.

Hilltops Being Hilltops

No Jordan Walls, no Cody Peters, no Josh Ewanchyna, no problem for the five-time defending champs and no-one is really surprised.   The “next men up” for the Hilltops executed and scored 34 points in their first win of the season.   Quarterback Tyler Herman finally got a shot to perform and he didn’t disappoint finishing with 14 completions for 257 yards and three touchdowns picking up the first win of his CJFL career.

No “LaProblem” For Raiders

With an injury to VI Raiders All-Star quarterback Jake Laberge their offensive punch was in question.  That is until Cole McGarvey took the reins.  He made his first CJFL start and was outstanding leading the offence in the Raiders home opener.  He finished completing 63% of his passes for 406 yards and threw an incredible five touchdown passes.

Mad Maddox

The London Beefeaters must really like their new head coach, Jesse Maddox, giving him something to smile about in his coaching debut.  The Beefs scored 72 points behind 571 yards of total offence and their defence pitched a shutout allowing just 23 yards against them.  Maddox has a 1.000 winning percentage as a head coach in the CJFL, albeit it’s only been one week, but he’s off on the right foot.

U Know

Only two players in the CJFL with a last name that starts with the letter U recorded a stat in Week 3 and both are running backs.   Juquon Uylett of the London Beefeaters rushed five times for 42 yards and scored a touchdown while Brandon Urciuoli (pictured) of the Winnipeg Rifles carried the rock 18 times for 114 yards.

CC = 4

On Saturday night in Edmonton, Huskies defensive back Cheyvez Campbell had an incredible four interceptions in their win over the Colts.  Believe it or not four picks in one game is not even close to a CJFL record.  Kirk Kupper of the St. James Rods 95 had 10 interceptions in one game back in 1965, which was matched by George Bihari of the Saskatoon Hilltops in 1971.    In 2007 John Boulton of the Kamloops Broncos collected seven interceptions, that’s been the most in the new millennium.
