The Hilltops, Thunder and Huskies open with a win

The Huskies led from start to finish after a 15 point first quarter.  New starting quarterback Declan O’Flaherty was 21 of 35 for 272 yards and threw a touchdown pass to Harrison Cabel and Sam Clayton.

Brandt Burzuk led the charge on the ground with 16 carries for 66 yards and a touchdown.

On the defensive side the Huskies looked sharp.  Cheyvez Campbell had an incredible four interceptions along with a fumble recovery.  In all they tallied eight sacks led by the two from Brett Van Der Korput.

The Colts got behind the eight-ball early but did keep their focus.    Quarterback KJ Stembridge threw for 101 yards and two touchdowns as Brandon MacIsaac and Joshua Bromfield each had one.

Mo Kemoh led the defensive side with a pair of sacks.

Saturday afternoon the Huskies (1-0) face the Edmonton Wildcats (0-1) and the Colts (0-1) welcome the Winnipeg Rifles (0-1) on Sunday afternoon.

With many new faces at the helm the Hilltops didn’t miss a beat.  Quarterback Tyler Herman recorded his first CJFL win finishing 14 of 27 for 257 yards and three touchdowns.   He found Connor Graham for five receptions and 123 yards and two of those three touchdowns.  Rylan Kleiter also caught a touchdown pass.

On the ground Ben Abrook showed why he’s “next man up” with 31 carries for 144 yards.

The Rifles actually outgained the champs recording 464 yards of total offence.  Quarterback Riley Naujoks found nine different receivers completing 22 passes for 339 yards and two scores.  Luke McMillan and Jake Roger each scored touchdowns.

On the ground Brandon Urciuoli had a great game against the champs with 114 yards on 18 carries.

This coming weekend the Hilltops (1-0) face their provincial rival the Regina Thunder (1-0) on Saturday and the Rifles (0-1) visit the Calgary Colts (0-1) on Sunday.

Edmonton Wildcats 21

It was a strange game for scoring.  The Wildcats scored all 21 points in the second quarter while the Thunder scored 21 points in the final half to claim the road win.

Thunder quarterback Blake Scherle completed 29 passes for 352 yards and threw three touchdowns.   Ethan Douglas, Tanner Zaharia and Greg Lamb each caught touchdown balls.

Davin Williamson led the defence with a team high seven tackles.  Finn Marcotte-Cribb picked off a pass and Andrew Montgrand recovered a fumble.

The Wildcats kept pushing the Thunder on Sunday. 

Quarterback Cody Olson was 11 of 26 for 127 yards and threw a touchdown to Lucas Howe.  Then on the ground Nash Etson scored a touchdown on four carries.

Their defence also got on the board when Ty Smith intercepted a pass and returned it 42 yards for a touchdown. It was the lone pick-six in the CJFL this past weekend.

This coming weekend the Thunder (1-0) welcome the Saskatoon Hilltops (1-0) and the Wildcats (0-1) face the Edmonton Huskies (1-0).
