Following Week 1 of the CJFL season there were many moments that stood out among the others.  Here are five takeaways from Week 1.

Sack Masters
The Rebels and Huskers combined for 16 quarterback sacks Saturday afternoon.  It’s the most combined sacks in a single game in recent memory.  Leo Ingram of the Rebels and James Moar of the Huskers each had 2.5 each to lead their respective teams.  At least 12 different players recorded at least half a sack.  In total quarterbacks were sacked 22 times in Week 1 with Partap Sandhu of the Langley Rams recording three of them.

80+=6
There were two interceptions in Week 1 that were returned for a touchdown of over 80 yards.  The first of the pair was by Marcel Arruda-Welch of the Valley Huskers who returned his pick 85 yards for a major.  Not to be outdone Gevhahn McNally-Hardisty of the VI Raiders returned an interception 89 yards for a score against the Langley Rams.  These two defensive backs combined for 165 returned yards and two touchdowns.

Deadly Duo
The return of wide receiver Khalik Johnson to the Langley Rams gives that offence a deadly combination with quarterback Duncan Little.  It may remind some fans of last year’s combo with Jevon Cottoy.  In Week 1 Little and Johnson connected seven times f or 122 yards and three touchdowns.   Johnson is the only player to score three majors during the first week of play.  He played at Carleton University in Ottawa last season.

Comeback Kids
The Westshore Rebels were down by two scores with just over six minutes to play on Saturday on the road in Chilliwack.  Using their excellent defensive stops the Rebels offence tied it when quarterback Colby Henkel found Brycen Mayoh with just over two minutes to play and the point after gave the Rebels the lead for good.    The Huskers botched a field goal attempt at the final buzzer giving the Rebels the comeback win.

Second Quarter Magic
The second quarter seemed to be the favourite during the three games on the weekend.   A total of 60 points were scored in the second frame with five of the six teams getting at least a field goal.

Extra Takeaway
Heated Sun

New Okanagan Sun head coach Jamie Boreham was ejected from the game on Saturday in his debut after disagreeing with officials.  He becomes the first head coach ejected from his first game in recent memory.
