The Rams, Sun and Rebels win in Week 1

What a way to kick off the 2019 CJFL season as the Rebels come from behind, scoring 14 points in the final quarter to steal a victory away from the Huskers.

Rebels’ quarterback Colby Henkel returned to the CJFL and threw for 152 yards on only nine completions and threw a touchdown to Brycen Mayoh.  In all Mayoh caught five passes for 57 yards while Nathan Falito hauled in three for 75 yards.

On the ground Zachary Lubin rumbled 71 yards on 12 carries and scored a pair of touchdowns.

Defensively the Rebels had a monster game getting to the quarterback recording eight sacks.  Leonard Ingram had 2.5 and Tanner Hayward collected a pair to lead the way.  Maleek Womack was also solid with five tackles and an interception.

The Huskers defense was also extremely solid until the fourth quarter.  Like the Rebels they also had eight sacks led by the 2.5 from James Moar.  Desmond Jeanson was terrific with four tackles and two interceptions and Marcel Arruda-Welch claimed an 85 yard pick-six.

Their offence was led by quarterback Reid Vankoughnett who finished 14 of 28 for 162 yards.  His favourite target was All-Canadian Brandon Poulin who caught a game high 10 passes for 115 yards and a touchdown.

On Saturday night the Rebels (1-0) will host the VI Raiders (0-1) in their home opener at 7:00pm and the Huskers (0-1) welcome the Okanagan Sun (1-0) also at 7:00pm.

The defending Cullen Cup champion Rams rode a 28 point second quarter on route to the 12 point win over the visiting Raiders on Saturday afternoon.

Quarterback Duncan Little was impressive with 20 completions for 342 yards and threw three touchdown passes to Khalik Johnson.  For the game he hauled in seven passes for 122 yards making a statement in Week 1.

In his first game as a Ram Andrew Pocrnic carried the rock 16 times for 97 yards and had two touchdowns.   As a complete balance the Rams tallied 437 yards of total offence.

Jarryd Taylor made his presence felt returning a punt 74 yards for a touchdown.  He also caught three passes for 71 yards.

On the defensive side Partap Sandhu played a massive role with three sacks and former Valley Husker Keegan Vicklund intercepted a pass.

The Raiders offence tried to keep pace with the Rams in the second quarter scoring 15 points but then ran out of steam. 

Quarterback Jacob Laberge completed 15 passes for 212 yards and three touchdowns.   Two of those majors were caught by Mike West, the other by Jared Braun.  North Rainey also caught five passes for 90 yards.

Eli Nelms-Horton got on the scoreboard as well with a 65 yard kick-off return for a touchdown.

Over on the defence Gevhahn McNally-Hardisty had an impressive 89 yard pick-six along with five tackles.  Jeremie Cheng also had an interception.

On Saturday the Rams (1-0) will visit the Kamloops Broncos (0-1) and the Raiders (0-1) travel to Westshore to face the Rebels (1-0).

The Sun blasted on Saturday night with 523 yards of total offence in a well balanced attack at the Apple Bowl.  Two quarterbacks combined for 252 yards on 16 completions and starter Alex Douglas threw a pair of touchdowns.  

Ten different receivers caught passes as Kian Ishani and Javen Kaechele each scored touchdowns.    On the ground Lawrenzo Dissee scored a major and Kelton Kouri rushed for 99 yards.

Defensively they held the Broncos to just 128 yards of total offence.   Jonah Williams had a game high six tackles, Ryley Amendt picked off a pass and Cory McCoy had a sack.

Saturday night the Sun (1-0) will visit the Valley Huskers (0-1) and the Broncos (0-1) welcome the Langley Rams (1-0).
