The Hamilton Hurricanes host the Windsor AKO Fratmen

The 2016 Ontario Conference championship features a pair of familiar foes as the Hamilton Hurricanes will host the Windsor AKO Fratmen on Sunday at 4:00pm at Tim Hortons Field. | WATCH HERE

It’s the fourth time in six seasons these two clubs will face each other in the Ontario title game.  The Fratmen have won the last two meetings (2013 & 2014).  The Hurricanes won last in 2011 and hosted the Canadian Bowl that season.

This year they have met twice each winning on the road.  The Fratmen beat the ‘Canes by 13 in Hamilton on September 3rd, then just two weeks ago the Hurricanes clinched first place and home field advantage with a 23 point victory in Windsor.

This game will feature the top two quarterbacks in the Conference.  Jake Marquette of the Hurricanes was named an OFC All-Star after leading the Conference with 103 completions, 1516 yards and 17 touchdowns.  He completed 64% of his passes and had a passer efficiency rating of 115.7.  On the other side of the field veteran Austin Lumley of the Fratmen tallied 1482 yards on 71 completions and also threw 17 majors.    His passer efficiency rating was 112.5, completing 50% of his throws.

Marquette had the Offensive Player of the Year to throw to finding Zeph Fraser 39 times for 651 yards and caught seven touchdowns.   Lumley’s main targets have been Omar Hayes Williams and Curtis Holmes, who have combined to haul in 38 passes for 842 yards and 11 touchdowns.

On the defensive side these clubs don’t give up much.  The Hurricanes led the Conference allowing just 86 points, while the Fratmen gave up 125.  Of those 86 points the Hurricane allowed, 43 of them were scored by the Fratmen.

Defensive Player of the Year John Rush led the ‘Canes with 25 tackles and two interceptions.  It’s the supporting cast that makes Hurricanes so good.  Farouk Musa made 15 tackles and had a pair of sacks while Mike Brown led the Conference with five interceptions.

The Fratmen secondary has been terrific with a Conference high 12 interceptions.  In all the defence forced 32 turnovers and finished with a +14.  Tyler Storie led the way with four interceptions including a pick-six.  Darren Quennell had a Conference high eight sacks and Matt Chamberlain had a team high 25 tackles.

This has all the making of another classic on Sunday.  It’ll be the final game the Ontario Conference plays with overaged players.  Kicking-off in 2017 the Conference will become full members of the CJFL again and be eligible to play for a national championship with players aged 17-22.  Kick-off on Sunday is set for 4:00pm in Hamilton.
